13. CONCEPT, RELATIONSHIP, AND IMPORTANCE
OF POLITICS, GOVERNANCE, AND
GOVERNMENT
-In order to understand how the government makes
decisions and takes actions, we must first learn the basic
concepts of politics and governance and the importance of
studying them.
-Knowing these foundations will prepare us in
understanding how the government works, the political
ideologies, the branches of the government, and
citizenship.

think it carries a negative
connotation?

17. POLITICS
-The science of the government
-It includes the decision-making process in
any group that makes and enforces rules for
its members.
18. POLITICS
For Heywood (2013), he defines politics as an
activity that involves the interaction of people,
whose relationship is characterized by conflict and
cooperation, and who come together to solve such
disagreements through binding solutions.
21. POLITICAL CONFLICTS
-There are different views in
politics (Agree & Disagree)
-The task of political scientists is to
consider how people resolve these
disagreements.
22. HOW CAN WE STUDY POLITICS?
-Studying politics entails using different
approaches or perspectives.
-It can be studied through political science
because embraces an array of theoretical
perspectives and a variety of analytic
frameworks. (E.g. Marxism, Feminism, etc.)
23. HOW CAN WE STUDY POLITICS?
- -In the Philippines, Politics can be studied
through the exercise of power by political
leaders, and the effectiveness of government
institutions, official action, appointments to a
position, crafting economic policies,
lawmaking, processing of applications for
government permits and licenses, etc.

29. GOVERNMENT
-It refers to the governing body where it is the instrument
of the state through which the will of the people is
expressed, carried out, and formulated.
-This term includes the persons and organizations that
make, enforce, and apply political decisions for a society.
-As an institution, it is them who concretizes the policies
and addresses the problems of the state.

- It pertains to the administrative action of
sovereign authority – the exercise of
authoritative direction or control over a
particular political unit or organization,
including the implementation of policies and
the monitoring or its jurisdiction.

-It is commonly defined as the exercise of
power or authority by political leaders for the
well-being of their country’s citizens or
subjects.
-To govern should now mean to facilitate or
regulate, not to dominate or command.

process of governance?
How do they interact in coming
up with, and in implementing
decisions?

nation

36. Why should you care about politics?
(1) You should always know what is going on
around you.
-For example, if a new law is made is made in your area, you might want to
make sure that you and the people around you know that a new law has
been made so that no one breaks the law without even knowing it.
-Also, if something dangerous is happening around you or someone you
know, you want to be aware if someone is breaking the law.
-It is very important to know what is happening around you.
37. Why should you care about politics?
(2) You should have a say in what will happen.
-Everyone should have a say in what will happen, because we all
live side by side with each other, and it would not be fair if someone was
left out.
-Also, each vote makes a difference in the ways that we live. It is always
important to share your opinion.
-The way you vote will affect many people and their everyday life.
38. Why should you care about politics?
(3) The decisions people make will affect many
lives.
-For example, if someone wanted to build on the land, it might be
good for the people who worked in the area, but residents who
lived nearby and loved the land and relied on the land for water and
food might be devastated.
-Sometimes things that sound like good ideas might be very
devastating later.
