Can PR and marketing save lives? It depends. Good stories elect presidents, move stock prices and convince people they need an iPad. Great stories -- those told with authenticity -- can make people want to be part of something larger than themselves and catalyze movements. In graduate school I did a massive content analysis of press coverage of the civil rights movement. Cutting and coding hundreds of articles from dozens of media outlets. (Try doing that without Google.) Weeks of reading about America in the 60s as told by press clippings made it clear how mediated information and social behavior were linked.
