- For those of you not familiar with Veeam, we are a software company that specializes in ensuring application availability and data protection across virtualized environments – in both private and hybrid clouds. We have an agent-less architecture that is easy to deploy and simple to manage. - Not enabling the Always-On Enterprise has a cost associated with it, Based on Veeam and Vanson Bourne’s recent study on the “Cost of downtime” the cost per hour for a mid Enterprise organisation is $80,000 per hour for a smaller company it’s a little less and for an Enterprise company considerably more! For a medium sized organisation with just 12 hours of unplanned downtime the cost of not being in business would cost $960k for an entire infrastructure however the cost cannot just be calculated at a $ value the effect on brand and reputation can also be catastrophic The Availability gap can also often be quantified at an item of data level as well as at a cost level, many companies do not achieve RTO and RPO targets, set out by the business and that number has declined over the 2 years as those targets get tighter.

- Net Impression: Understand the challenge when working with VMware native VM Snapshots Speaker Notes: How traditional VMware backups work? The backup application calls the API to start a backup of a VM VMware will create a VM Snapshot The backup application will read all data while the VMware Snapshot is open After backup is done the VM snap will be committed Problem: During the Snapshot commit at the end there is high load on the VMware environment and the VM itself. It can even happen that DB server runs into response issues. Esp on large VMs (like 2 TB big SQL servers) the snap removal is a challenge as the change rate is high.
- Speaker notes: In our example, the VMware Snapshot was open for 34 min. (during the backup) but VMware needed another 28 min. to remove the snap afterwards. So the overall backup time was 1:02hrs. for the VM. Editorial: No one has another 28 minutes to complete the backup of this VM. If you have an environment of 1000 VM’s imagine multiplying the amount of time it would take to complete the backup of your environment.
- Net Impression: This highlights how easy Veeam is to use – this is a key differentiator and is one of the reasons that our customers choose Veeam This is where we are going to backup the data within the Snapshot Speaker Notes: Veeam does not avoid the VMware snap completely but is able minimize the time how long the snap is open down to some seconds or minutes compared to hrs. before. So the overhead while the VM snap is removed is very low.
- Net Impression: This highlights how easy Veeam is to use – this is a key differentiator and is one of the reasons that our customers choose Veeam This is where we are going to backup the data within the Snapshot Speaker Notes: With BfSS (Backup for Storage Snapshot) the same backup looks like the following: Snap is now open for 10 sec. (34 min. before) Snap removal takes now 26 sec. (28 min. before)
- Net Impression: Storage Snapshots to optimize the RPO down to minutes for Tier 1 applications; Value add of Veeam – leveraging Nimble crash consistent Snapshots Speaker Notes: You can combine Veeam application consistent Snapshots and backups with Nimble crash consistent Snapshots to lower your RPO because all Veeam restore features can be used with Nimble crash consistent Snapshot as well Example: Let’s imagine we have a Tier 1 application like a SQL or Exchange Server By combining both Backups and Snapshots we can get the RPO down to some minutes instead of hours. We could run: 4x a day a Veeam application consistent Snapshots or Backup, to make sure everything is consistent Run every 30 minutes Nimble crash consistent Snapshots to lower the RPO down to 30min.

- With Veeam’s integration, a conversation on Availability and keeping applications online begins, rather than just talking about backup. Veeam leverages frequently created storage snapshots to recover VMs, OS files and application items, adding a level automation that isn’t possible with the storage on its own. This capability augments existing backup strategies, for example, nightly backups. Now, there is much less of a chance that data will be lost during the day between scheduled backups. By bringing this up during primary storage discussions, you are able to add additional value to the storage sale and attach other HPE products, such as StoreOnce, or even additional server and storage hardware for DR. Furthermore, each of these can have services added for setup and configuration.
- Net Impression: Understand how a restore of even the biggest SQL server works Speaker Notes: If you use regular ways to restore a failed VM it may take you hours and days until your back online as all data needs to be copied back to production. Instant VM recovery directly out of a Nimble Snapshot Without moving any data the VM is back online within some minutes at same performance Afterwards a storage vmotion is performed Example: Lets imagine your 2TB SQL server got corrupted or deleted. Restoring the server would take several hours or even days. With instant recovery Veeam boots up the failed VM directly Out of the ONTAP Snapshot and the restore takes only some seconds or minutes until you VM is back online. Afterwards the data will me migrated for the temporary datastore using Storage VMotion.
