 A noun is a word for a person, place, or thing.
Everything we can see or talk about is represented by a
word that names it. That ‘naming’ word is called
a noun.
 Common nouns name people, animals, places or
things.
 Proper nouns begin with a capital letter.
 They name particular people, animals, places, things,
organisations, days, and months.
 Collective nouns name groups of people, animals or
things.
 Concrete nouns name things you can see, hear, smell
or touch.
 Abstract nouns name feelings, qualities, ideas or
actions that cannot be seen unless related to a person,
an action or a concrete noun.
 Compound nouns are formed when two nouns are
joined to form a new word, which is also a noun.
 Rule up a 5 column table in your book with the
headings: common, proper, collective, concrete and
abstract
 Choose a page from your novel, read through it and
record any nouns you find. Record the nouns you find
under the correct heading
 Create a mind map to display your knowledge of nouns
 An article is a kind of adjective which is always used
with, and gives some information, about a noun.
 The three articles in English are a, an and the.
 There are two different types of articles that we use in
writing and conversation to point out or refer to a
noun or group of nouns: definite and indefinite
articles.
 Indefinite articles are the words a and an. Each of
these articles is used to refer to a noun, but the noun
being referred to is not a specific person, place, object,
or idea. It can be any noun from a group of nouns.
 The definite article, the, is a shortened form of this,
that, these or those and is used before singular and
plural nouns.
 Using the nouns you recorded earlier, choose 10 to add
articles in front of
With a partner:
