Basics of using the WordPress blog

         www.jonathanstrong.co.uk
1. Log in to WordPress

TIP: Parts of this tutorial may look slightly different to what
you have, however the processes should be the same.
2. Click on posts
3. Add, edit and view posts

This is your ‘Posts’ dashboard. Here, you can see a list of your blog posts.
Read on to learn how to add, edit and view posts.

TIP: Hovering over a blog post will bring up more options under the title.
These are specific to that blog post and also allow you to ‘quick edit’ (4.)
3.1. Adding a new post

On WordPress, there are sometimes two ways to things. You can either
use the sidebar to the left of the page or click ‘Add New’ next to Posts.

TIP: I would recommend using the sidebar, as it’s also where you can find
most other options such as categories and comments.
3.2. Editing a post

                                    Publishing options

                                    Post options

                                        Categories
                                                   Tags

This window appears when you edit a post, whether it is a
new post or an existing post.

TIP: Post options may look different depending on what
theme you have.
3.3. Viewing a post
When you are ready to post your blog, use the right
sidebar options to save a draft, preview or publish.

TIP: Don’t forget to select a category or click add a
new category. This helps readers find blog posts for
a particular topic.

TIP: It is useful, but not essential, to get in the habit
of using tags for your blog posts. This helps readers
find the blog post they’re looking for, as well as
helping search engines find your post.
4. Quick Edit
Quick edit is a useful way of making a change to a blog post quickly
without having to go into the edit blog post window. Below are a few key
terms/features which you may find useful.

Permalink –A permalink, or permanent link, is a URL that points to a
specific blog post or page after it has passed from the front page.
E.g. www.jonathanstrong.co.uk/this-is-a-permalink-to-a-page-or-post

Sticky post – If you have an important blog post, you can make it a sticky
post and it will appear at the top of your blog.

Allow pings – Pinging notifies a website about any updates to your blog.
I hope you found this basic tutorial on how
to use the WordPress blog useful!
