When dealing with complexity you have to be aware of that cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. With this in mind, success or failure, is not completely in our hands when we are developing complex products. What is in our hands is the commitment we show, the ownership we take, and the effort we put in. That is what we should celebrate.

In this article I will explore why I think I think it is important to celebrate
commitment, ownership and hard work, rather than success or failure in
complex product development.
Traditionally what you usually celebrate are success stories. You deliver a
successful product before a deadline. You win some award. You make a lot of
money. It makes sense to celebrate that. Even if you were just lucky.
Another option is to celebrate failure, because of the learning opportunities that
can be gained from that failure. Spotify apparently applies this as part of their
growth mindset [1]. But failure could just be bad luck.
When dealing with complexity you have to be aware of that cause and effect can
only be deduced in retrospect [2]. With this in mind, success or failure, is not
completely in our hands when we are developing complex products. What is in
our hands is the commitment we show, the ownership we take, and the effort we
put in. That is what we should celebrate. Always, no matter what the outcome.
Should we learn from failures? Absolutely. But we should also learn from
successes. Because success, as much as failure, when developing complex
products is never truly, completely in our hands. And we need to understand that
even though we succeeded, we could easily have failed – and we need to
continuously evaluate how we can reduce that risk of failure, and how we can
become more efficient and effective.
So don’t believe you are invincible just because you win, and don’t beat yourself
up if you lose. Know that if you did your best, then that is cause for celebration,
and never stop learning. Resting on your laurels could just as easily be your
undoing as a big failure.
