Fire
action
Staff should acquaint themselves with the sound of the fire alarm, location of the
break glass points and fire fighting equipment. It is equally important to know of
primary and alternative escape routes as well as the location of the fire assembly
point.
What you should do:
If you suspect that there is a fire on the other side of a door,
DO NOT open it.
As you leave the building, ensure that all the fire doors and
windows on your route are closed.

On hearing the fire alarm
Leave the building at once, quickly and calmly by the nearest
available route. Escape routes are indicated by Green signs.
Assist with the evacuation of visitors.
DO NOT stop to collect personal belongings.
EXIT3
Call for assistance and IF SAFE TO DO SO, attack the fire with
the fire fighting equipment provided. If the fire should get
out of control, or if your escape route is threatened,
LEAVE THE BUILDING AT ONCE.

The Law
From 6am on 26 March 2006 smoking is not permitted in enclosed* public places,
including bars, hotels, all types of clubs, cafes and restaurants
Proprietors cannot permit customers or members to smoke in these premises.
If they do, they will be liable to a Fixed Penalty Fine of £200.
Why
Second-hand smoke kills and causes lung cancer, heart disease and respiratory illnesses
in adults and a variety of conditions in children.
There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, so ventilation is not a solution.
If someone breaks the law
1. Draw their attention to the ‘No Smoking’ signs
2. Advise them that smoking is prohibited by law and politely ask them to stop smoking.
3. Advise them of any place where smoking is permitted, such as beer gardens or shelters.
4. Refuse service to anyone who continues to smoke and ask them to leave.
5. If a customer refuses to leave, follow usual procedures for dealing with anti-social behaviour.
6. If threatened, seek the assistance of the police. Do not put yourself in danger.

The Disability Discrimination
Act Part III 2004
The DDA Part III amendments produced a strict guideline which came
into effect on the 1st of October 2004 guaranteeing that equal access
must be made to all people using public buildings, including educational
establishments.
Signs should be placed at a height suitable for everyone to reach unaided,
generally this is recommended to be no lower than 1400mm from the floor
and no higher than 1700mm.
Directional signs should be
placed at each entry point,
as well as signs showing the
toilet locations. Fire exit and
exit signs should be visible
from all locations.
Identification signs (such as
door signs) should be located
next to the door, in case that
door has been left open.
All signs displayed white on
blue are also available as
black on white. For ease
