BBC – Zara McDermott – Disordered Eating Documentary
Zara McDermott
Zara McDermott presented her documentary.
Zara Nicole McDermott, born on 14th December 1996, is an established English media creator.
She was well known on the hit series love island where she was a contestant on the fourth series
of love island. Ever since appearing on love island she appeared on X factor and Celebrity, made in
Chelsea. After Zara made and produced very important BBC documentaries such as revenge porn,
uncovering rape culture and finally her own established Disordered Eating which is heavily based
on her experiences.
I learned more about the effects of eating disorders and how social media can come into play with
that and how its dangerous. I learned about the cost of becoming well known in media and the
affects known one actually sees and its really shocking the amount one person can receive.
After listening to Zara and her opening about what happened after she left love island how social
media for her became toxic and targeted and her becoming self-conscious about her body. Since
she was on love island one of the students in the lecture asked about if she regretted going on
love island. She said ‘’I don’t regret it and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it’’ from that I
gathered love island wasn’t the problem but what came after truly affected her mentally and
physically.
After the documentary ended I came to realize the dangers with technology with that comes
trolls’ and hate comments’ and ‘vile disgusting comments’ and how it can affect a person Zara
went into. In that some people aren’t strong enough for the world social media has put itself in
which is become a problem that needed to be addressed how a digitized screen is dangerous to a
person
Zara and the presentation made me realise the dangers of one comment in someone’s feed, truly
put a perspective on someone mental state and how social media can have a massive part to play
in that whether that may be for the better or for the worse in Zara’s case. I think Zara and the
documentary was helpful for me and anyone wanting to understand social media and how toxic it
can be but also for eating disorder’s I learned that not all eating disorders are physical
