3. Beliefs
Jewish people believe there’s
only one God (Yahweh) who has
established a covenant or
special agreement with them.
Their God communicates to
believers through prophets and
rewards good deeds while also
punishing evil.
4. DID YOU KNOW?
According to the text, God
first revealed himself to a
Hebrew man named Abraham,
who became known as the
founder of Judaism. Jews
believe that Yahweh made a
special covenant with
Abraham and that he and his
descendants were chosen
people who would create a
great nation.
5. The Torah
The most holy Jewish book, Torah which
means ‘teaching’.
The Torah contains the five books revealed to
Moses by God on Mount Sinai.

The Torah is stored inside the Ark in each
Synagogue. This is the holiest place in the
synagogue.
6. Ten Commandments
It is found in the book of Exodus. They are:
Do not have any other gods.
Do not make or worship idols.
Do not disrespect or misuse God’s name.
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
Honour your mother and father.
Do not commit murder.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal.
Do not tell lies
Do not be envious of others.
Exodus 20:1–15
The Ten Commandments were given to Moses by
Yhaweh for all Jewish people to follow. They
form part of the covenant made at Mount Sinai.
7. DID YOU KNOW?
Holy Days
The most important day of the week is the Sabbath, which
means is a day made holy by refraining from weekday work.
Sabbath starts at sunset on Friday and continues until sunset on
Saturday. During Shabbat, Jewish people remember the story of
creation from the Torah where God created the world in 6 days
and rested on the 7th day.
Rosh Hashanah, literally means “start of the year” and always
takes place on the first two days of Tishrei, the first month of
the Hebrew calendar.
8. The Star of David
This Jewish symbol and it is the
standard symbol in synagogues. It is
recognised as the symbol of Jewish
Community and is named after King David
of ancient Israel. Jews started to use
the symbol in the Middle Ages.
The Star of David is a generally
recognized symbol of both Jewish
identity and Judaism. This emblem Jewish
people is the Megan David (Shield of
David) also known as star of David.
9. The Menorah
Is one of the aldest symbol of Jewish
faith. The seven lamps allude to the
branches of human knowledge,
represented by the six lamps inclined
inwards towards, and symbolically
guided by, the light of God represented
by the central lamp. The menorah also
symbolizes the creation in seven days,
with the center light representing the
Sabbath.
