SQL SERVER CUSTOMER SUCCESS
Scenario
Humantech is one of the world’s largest providers of ergonomics consulting and software
services. The company decided to standardize its IT environment on one operating system in
order to promote its continued growth and success. However, Humantech wanted to keep its
preferred Windows database, Microsoft SQL Server, because of the solution’s reliable
performance and familiar technology.
Solution
To satisfy both needs, the company upgraded from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2017 on Linux.
Now, Humantech saves on IT maintenance and has an updated database that offers fast operation
and strong security.
“During the restore process, you simply upgrade the SQL Server 2017 database along the
way. As a result, it was easy to deploy and gave us confidence in the evaluation.”
- Ken Lupo, Director of Technology at Humantech
“We did not want to go for a walk on the wild side. Our goal was to ensure that our solutions
would be as durable, off-the-shelf, and minimally customized as possible, which is why we
sought to go with a flexible database that we already knew so well.”

WHEN WILL END OF SUPPORT HAPPEN?
SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will no longer be supported starting on July 9, 2019.
Compliance
concerns
As support ends, your
organization will fail to
meet compliance standards
and industry regulations
Higher
maintenance costs
Maintaining legacy
servers, firewalls,
intrusion systems, etc.
gets expensive quickly
No security
updates
There will be no access to
critical security updates,
opening the potential for
business interruptions
WHAT DOES END OF SUPPORT MEAN FOR
SQL SERVER 2008 & 2008 R2?
SECURITY
At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and
SQL Server 2008 R2, there will be no more
security updates and hotfixes from Microsoft,
opening the door to potential business
interruptions.
Don’t take the risk of losing precious data or
having issues with your business applications
performance because of potential weaknesses
of your environment by not upgrading!
Without security updates you may fail to comply with standards
and regulations that can seriously hamper your ability to:
• Protect against hackers, malware with root access to machines,
man in the middle scenarios, and government subpoenas
• Securely purge for customer data, leaving it vulnerable to access
by outside parties
• Utilize E2E data protection across SQL Server and frequently
used together services
COMPLIANCE
At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and
2008 R2, your system may cease to be compliant
with regulatory standards.
Failure to be compliant can lead to business
complications, penalties and fines across several
industries.
Regulatory compliance standards may no longer be met at
end of support, such as:
• PCI-DSS for credit card transactions
• HIPAA for medical patient privacy
• GLBA for financial institutions
• GDPR for companies who do business in the EU
What is the GDPR?
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a comprehensive
new privacy law that gives residents of the European Union (EU)
greater control over their “personal data” (which is precisely
defined by the GDPR) and requires organizations to maintain
appropriate security of personal data. Failure to comply with the
GDPR could result in significant penalties.
How much can companies be fined for noncompliance?
Companies can be fined up to €20m or 4% of annual global
turnover, whichever is greater, for failure to meet certain GDPR
requirements.
When will the GDPR come into effect?
The European Parliament approved and adopted the GDPR in April
2016 and enforcement will begin May 25, 2018
GDPR is Multinational!
When it comes to GDPR compliance, it’s not just European
organizations affected, those outside of the EU who process data
in connection with the offering of goods and services to, or
monitoring the behavior of, EU residents.
GDPR ENFORCEMENT
BEGINS MAY 25, 2018
At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and
2008 R2, your systems may no longer be compliant
with upcoming GDPR regulations.
GDPR non-compliance can result in fines for
organizations who do not adequately protect
consumer data.

The company decided to standardize its IT environment on one operating system in order to promote its continued growth and success. However, Humantech wanted to keep its preferred Windows database, Microsoft SQL Server, because of the solution’s reliable performance and familiar technology. Solution To satisfy both needs, the company upgraded from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2017 on Linux. Now, Humantech saves on IT maintenance and has an updated database that offers fast operation and strong security. “During the restore process, you simply upgrade the SQL Server 2017 database along the way. As a result, it was easy to deploy and gave us confidence in the evaluation.” - Ken Lupo, Director of Technology at Humantech “We did not want to go for a walk on the wild side. Our goal was to ensure that our solutions would be as durable, off-the-shelf, and minimally customized as possible, which is why we sought to go with a flexible database that we already knew so well.” - Jim Good, President of Humantech HUMANTECH MOVES TO SQL SERVER 2017 ON LINUX TO REDUCE COSTS AND BOOST EFFICIENCY

  • 31. What is the GDPR? General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a comprehensive new privacy law that gives residents of the European Union (EU) greater control over their “personal data” (which is precisely defined by the GDPR) and requires organizations to maintain appropriate security of personal data. Failure to comply with the GDPR could result in significant penalties. How much can companies be fined for noncompliance? Companies can be fined up to €20m or 4% of annual global turnover, whichever is greater, for failure to meet certain GDPR requirements. When will the GDPR come into effect? The European Parliament approved and adopted the GDPR in April 2016 and enforcement will begin May 25, 2018 GDPR is Multinational! When it comes to GDPR compliance, it’s not just European organizations affected, those outside of the EU who process data in connection with the offering of goods and services to, or monitoring the behavior of, EU residents. GDPR ENFORCEMENT BEGINS MAY 25, 2018 At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2, your systems may no longer be compliant with upcoming GDPR regulations. 3. Before I dive into the specific new features, let’s take a minute to talk about the hybrid data platform we’ve created for your innovation and disruption. What do we mean by hybrid? At its core, the hybrid data platform enables simplicity and common sense: It accepts any data from any source – structured or not, big or small. It functions across on-premises and the public cloud without the divide between them It offers exactly what you need – an operational database, a data warehouse, a data lake and a hybrid integration pipeline across on-prem and cloud   To Audience: How many of you have a hybrid environment with data on-prem and cloud? At Microsoft, we know it’s not just about having the right technology, though. It’s about getting technology out of your way so you can use it intuitively to unlock your data and your business. That’s why we’ve taken on the challenge of reimagining the modern data platform. We don’t just build products; we design an interconnected platform that:   Enables you to reason over any data anywhere, Gives your flexibility of choice, and Provides industry leading security and performance   Throughout the rest of the presentation, I’ll be sharing the most recent changes to our products and services. Let’s get going!
  4. Based on what we just saw, it might not surprise you to hear that SQL Server 2017 has set some new benchmarks. Our latest performance benchmarks on Windows and Linux blow away our old records. OLTP – We have #1 OLTP TPC-E performance DW: And, we have the fastest performing DW. With best price/performance.   We CONTINUE to offer the most secure database with fewer vulnerabilities over the last 7 years than Oracle or IBM SQL Server offers Advanced Analytics built-in including R and Python. - Now you can use SQL Server to operationalize your data science models - Use native T-SQL commands to score data in near real-time   And unlike our competitors, we give you mobile BI built-in on every device. SQL Server 2017 gives you your choice of platform and language, and the most consistent on-prem to cloud environment.   And it does all this for 1/10th the cost of Oracle
  5. Azure SQL DB provides developers with flexibility of choice – through dynamic scaling and your choice of tools and platforms It helps you easily manage and monitor 1000’s of databases automatic performance enhancements with Adaptive query processing – the more you run your app, the faster it goes. elastic pools technology manage and scale databases on demand  like all Azure services, SQL database guarantees security
  6. Azure SQL Database is a fully-managed relational database-as-a service that provides the best and most economical cloud destination for your SQL Server data. SQL Database uses the Microsoft SQL Server Engine, which means it’s high-performance, reliable, and secure. You can use it to build data-driven applications and websites in the programming language of your choice, without needing to manage infrastructure. As a PaaS offering, Microsoft operates SQL Server for you and ensures availability and performance. PaaS features that come with SQL Database include, but are not limited to: provisioning and resizing (w/ Azure Portal experience), built-in auto HA (99.99%), automatic backup, point-in-time-restore (database-level), and active geo-replication. Because Microsoft assumes much of the daily maintenance, administration and infrastructure costs, your IT organization can quickly realize cost and operational benefits that you may not have otherwise experienced with your on-premises or hosted solution. In fact, a study by IDC found that organizations who modernized their databases from SQL Server to SQL Database realized up to a 406% ROI over five years.1 In addition to the benefits of PaaS, SQL Database also provides key benefits in some specific areas: It has built-in intelligence that helps you dramatically reduce the costs of running and managing databases and maximizes both the performance and security of your application. SQL Database provides breakthrough productivity and performance to meet the demands of today’s apps. Each database is isolated from each other and portable, each with its own service tier with a guaranteed performance level. SQL Database provides different performance levels for different needs, and enables databases to be pooled to maximize the use of resources and save money. You can adjust performance with minimal downtime to your app. Dynamic scalability enables your database to transparently respond to rapidly changing resource requirements and enables you to only pay for the resources that you need when you need them. In-memory technologies provide real-time business insight with up to 30x improved throughput and latency and up to 100x faster queries and reports. It will provide the ability to seamlessly lift and shift your SQL Server data to the cloud to a managed instance with a full SQL Server programming surface area that removes the need to re-architect your apps, saving you time and resources. SQL Database combines the operational and financial benefits of Azure PaaS with a financially-backed SLA and business continuity tools to protect the lifeblood of your business, your data. SQL Database will soon offer a Azure Hybrid Benefit for SQL Server that maximizes the investments you’ve made in on-premises licensing by providing discounted rates in the cloud. 1The Business Value of Microsoft Azure SQL Database Services, IDC, March 2015
  7. For those of you who want great performance at an even lower total cost of ownership, why not run your new SQL Server 2017 licenses in an Azure VM – the only VM tuned by the team that built SQL Server?   Today, you’ll find new gallery images for both Windows Server and Linux as well as templates that make it a lot easier to create a SQL instance. We also heard some of you need a simpler way to handle backup for lots of VMs, so we created a new enterprise backup solution.   Running VMs on Azure is a great way to get more value from your SQL Server investments.
  8. What does Data Hybrid Use Benefit Get You? 12. This is a simplified 1-slide version for customers to show the all-up positioning of these four main SKUs. Enterprise: Comprehensive, high-end capabilities for demanding database and business intelligence requirements. Standard: Core data management and business intelligence capabilities for non-critical workloads with minimal IT resources. Express: Easy to get started, free to use for redistribution and embedding. Developer: Free version where customers can build, test, and demo apps in non-production environments Now we’ll look at features in detail with a focus on Standard and Enterprise only.
  13. General approach is to scale features down from EE to SE with throttles such that features are programmable in SE but EE is required for scale and performance: Tabular Models in SE with 16GB memory cap per instance In-memory OLTP in SE with 64MB memory restriction at the instance level In-DB-Analytics allow developers to execute RRE-functions outside EE with close-to-RRO limitations (perf & dataset size) Security, encryption story is fractured: TDE moves from EE to SE; Always Encrypted is EE 1-page overview of features by edition with new features highlighted.
