2. OBJECTIVE:
Lear how to correctly transfer an individual from wheelchair to car
and safely transfer back from the car to wheelchair.

3. PROCEDURE:`.
Position the person:
1. Explain the procedure in how to correctly transfer from
wheelchair to car.
a. Position the care recipient behind the passenger door
alongside the car.
b. Inform the care recipient about the transfer and what
your going to do.
c. Ask them to help you if they are able to.
d. As you transfer the care recipient continue to talk to them all
throughout the entire procedure.

4. PROCEDURE:`.
2. Lock the brakes
a. Be sure to lock the breaks before moving forward.
3. Remove legs from foot rests.
a. Assist the care recipient to remove the foot from footrests.
3. Move footrests away and remove.
a. Swing the footrest out and away from the care recipient legs
and lift it from attachment.
b. Set the foot, assemble off to the side so it will not become a
tripping hazard.

5. PROCEDURE:`.
5. Lift person out of chair
a. Let the care recipient know that you are going to start the
transfer.
b. Place your legs apart with the care recipients legs together in
between yours, get as close to the care recipient as possible
to avoid arching your back.
c. Place your arm underneath the care recipients armpit and lay
your hands flat against his/her back.
d. Be sure that your knees are bend and to avoid injury.
e. Lift using both of your legs and use your arms to lift the care
recipient to standing position.

6. PROCEDURE:`.
6. Small steps back to door
a. Take smaller steps backward while keeping your arms and
hands on the same position until your positioned against the
door and the care recipient is standing beside the seat.
b. If the care recipient chooses to hold on unto the car for extra
support be sure to hold the side of the care and not the door
for support.
c. Turn the recipient unto his/her back faced to the back of the
seat. And begin to position your arms and hands at the
back, your left arm should be at the recipients right armpit
and hands should be laid flat as close to left shoulder as
possible.
d. Your right hand should be positioned on the back of the care recipients
head so it will not come in contact with the roof.

7. PROCEDURE:
7. Lower person into seat
a. Slowly lower the care recipient to the seat and bend
your knees as you go. REMEMBER to keep your back
straight.
8. Pivot legs and back
Once the care recipient is seated adjust your right arm, position
your right arm underneath both of his/her legs or keeping your
left arm as before. Swing the care recipient legs into the car
using your right arms or supporting their back using your left
arm and hands.

8. PROCEDURE:
9. Assist with seat belt
Once the care recipient is comfortable be sure their seat belt is
buckled. They may perform this task or you may assist them.
10. Ensure hands, arms and legs are inside.
a. Once that the seat belt is fastened make sure that the
recipient hands, arms and legs are inside the car before
closing the door.
11. Optional- you may place the wheel chair inside the trunk at the
back of the care

9. Transfer from Car to wheelchair

10. 1. Position and lock the brakes.
a. Unfold the wheel chair and position behind the passenger door along the car.
b. Next, lock the brakes to ensure that the wheelchair will not move or transport.
2. Assist with seat belt.
a. Open the door or ask the care recipient to remove his/her seatbelt or assist
him/her in doing so.
b. BE sure to inform the care recipient about the transferring including the steps and
what he/she can do to help during the transfer.
3. Place Left arm behind the back
a. First position your left arm underneath the care recipients right armpit and then lay
your hand flat far side of his/her back.
b. Next position your right arm underneath the care recipients legs.
4. Place right arm and Pivot
a. Swing the care recipients legs out of the car, ensure that you support their back
with your left arms and hand,
b. Try to keep his/her back straight as much as possible to make him/her
comfortable.

11. 5. Lift person out of seat
a. Move your left arm underneath your care recipients right armpit with your left hand
flat on his/her back.
b. Then position your right hand at the back of the care recipient head to prevent
contact with the roof.
c. BE sure to keep your knees bend and back straight while lifting. Remember to lift
with your legs.
6. Small steps to wheel chair
a. Once you are both standing, re position your right arm underneath the care
recipient left armpit and have your right hand lie flat on his her back.
b. You can keep your left arm in the same position. Take tiny steps back towards the
wheel chair until the back of the care recipient legs touch the edge of the seat.
7. Lower person into wheelchair
a. Slowly lower the care recipient into the wheel chair. Your kneed should bend and
your back should be straight.
b. The care recipients legs should be positioned in-between your legs as you lower
him/her into the chair.

12. 8. Re- attached the foot rest assembly to the wheelchair.
9. Re- position feet on the footrest
a. Lower the foot rest and assist the care recipient in placing the feet on the foot rest.
10. Dis engage brakes.
a. AT THIS POINT IT IS SAFE TO UNLOCK THE BRAKES AND YOU ARE READY TO GO.
