The Powerpoint contains many animations. The Haywain is the most famous of Constable’s painting. It was painted in 1820-21 in his London studio, from sketches in his dairy sketches, observations and reference materials. He knew the place very well, as he grew up here, in Suffolk. His father was a wealthy corn merchant with two water mills and some 90 acres of farmland, around here. The more you look at this painting the more you will realise, how well John Constable told his story. In this late summer day, the empty haywain was to be taken across the field to collect the harvested hay.

4. The painting was painted in 1821 on a
sunny day afternoon, in autumn after
harvesting.
The haywain was to be taken to the far side
of the field to collect dried bales of hays for
the cattle in the coming winter. The local
spaniel dog ‘Shingle’ joined in excitement by
the bank of the river.
The haywain was cleaned in a small
channel of the River Stour. The channel
diverted some of the water from the river to
drive the local mill.
Further along was Willy Lott’s cottage. An
unconcerned woman was fetching water
from the river to fill up her jugs. Over on the
other bank of the river a keen angler was
pushing through the undergrowth to get onto
the rowing boat, moored by the edge of the
water’s edge.
5. The haywain was being clean to be taken to the other side of the river for carrying the hay.
6. In another painting, Constable painted the Flatford mill just yards downstream to Willy Lott’s house (extreme left).
7. Near the bank of the river a fisherman was pushed his way through the vegetation to get to the boat.
