What is SLEEP DEPRIVATION?
How important is sleep to us teens?
 You need sleep as much as you need to breathe and eat. While you’re
sleeping, your body is busy tending to your physical and mental health and
getting you ready for another day.
 In children and adolescents, hormones that promote growth are released
during sleep. These hormones help build muscle mass, as well as make
repairs to cells and tissues. Sleep is vital to development during puberty.
 Did you know? You
can live for weeks without food, but you’ll die in 7 days if you don’t sleep?

Voluntary Behavior
 associated with chronic sleep deprivation caused by a
voluntary pattern of restricted sleep.

 In some cases, sleep deprivation can occur as a result of stimuli in the
environment where the patient sleeps.

Sleeping Habits
 Additionally, the sleep habits can also have an effect on the quality
and quantity of sleep. Such as exercising at night.

 Insomnia is a condition involving difficulty sleeping at
night that affects up to a third of the adult population
and is associated with sleep deprivation.

 Sleep apnea is a health condition involving the
collapse of the upper airway while an

or tonsillitis can cause changes to breathing
while sleeping, causing an individual to wake
