Most chemical professionals have a Linked-In profile but don't take advantage of this powerful social networking tool. Attend this session if you want to learn why you should login frequently, update your status regularly, join groups, participate in discussions, follow companies, endorse and/or recommend colleagues. Examples will be given of how effective this social media vehicle can be for chemical professionals from industry, government and academia. Presented by Jennifer Maclachlan in the Resources and Best Practices for Entrepreneurs symposium on the Small Chemical Businesses track at #NERM2013.

2. Who is this room has a linked-in profile?
Let’s see a show of hands
How often do you login to Linked-In?
Do you login to Linked-In from a mobile device?
Why do you login?
3. Getting started at Linked-In
Use the customize option for your Linked-In Public Profile:
Example: www.linkedin.com/in/jenniferlmaclachlan
This is printed on the back of my business card. I want
people I meet to be able to connect with me
Make connections: this can be done the fast and easy way
by sending invites to connect to your entire address book
But beware of this: Linked-In continues to send email to
those people you invited to connect and they may end up
feeling obligated to connect and/or it could be a family
member who may be better served as a Facebook friend
than as a Linked-In connection
4. Getting started at Linked-In:
Select a profile picture that actually looks like you
It comes in handy from a real-life social
networking perspective when contacts can
recognize you.
5. BUILD YOUR NETWORK
Use a personalized message when you can
Otherwise, if people don’t know you, then they have to look at
your profile
Truthfully, they will look at common connections and judge
your value as a connection based on those connections
Tell them how you know them and/or why you want to connect
Remember: Linked-In is considered social networking for
business professionals; so be social and communicate
7. WRITE YOUR PROFILE SUMMARY
Make it easy for people to connect with you
Your summary is the highlight reel of your profile
Don’t make people scroll down to decide if they want to
connect with you
Compel them to click the CONNECT button with your
summary
12. Why it’s helpful to know when
contacts change jobs
Seeing that Jennifer Milk is
no longer employed by my
local Patch will prompt me to
connect with the new Editor
of The Patch.
13. You can take it with you when you go…
You’ll be able to take your contacts with you when you
leave your job if you are Linked-In with them
18. Linked-In Groups are a way to connect, interact and meet people with similar
interests and/or professional goals
19. Remember that Linked-In is professional and there are far more people
watching the discussions that you might ever know.
Don’t get tricked by the trolls.
20. Updates are for Everyone
Don’t know what to share in your Linked-In
update?
Whether you work in industry, academia or
government, the update function should be
utilized to share what you are working on,
presentations you have given, blog posts,
meetings you are attending, interesting articles
you have read etc.
22. THIS POST ORIGINATED ON HOOTSUITE AND I SHARED
IT SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH LINKED-IN AND TWITTER
Note that this update is written in Twitter
language with hashtags
26. Did this presentation leave you wanting to learn

media marketing best practices across the most
