2017 MACE Annual Conference presentation from keynote speaker Mark Lindquist.
Chamber professionals have been equipped with the tools, techniques and strategies they need to make the case that chamber membership is not only a good value, but a necessary part of a successful business. It is up to each attendee to hold on to the passion for maximizing membership ROI throughout the weeks, months and years ahead. Mark will deliver a closing keynote that sends you out the door on fire, ready to prove to all of our members that a chamber membership is a good investment.

With a beginning like this… I had to live for passion – on the edge of my seat!!
Real World – School Assembly
Reignite the passion inside of you for the thing you do here at the chamber. What do we do? We wake up each and every day ask ourselves these questions: “How can I add value to my members?” “What can I do to ensure that my members are seeing a return on their investment in our chamber of commerce?”
Baby graphic…
If we are going to reinvent ourselves and give birth to a renewed focus on the return on investment for a chamber member we are going to have to get out of our comfort zone.

What if you approached every new situation you encounter in the next three months with the awareness that this is our nature? What if we recognized that these are the mental roadblocks that keep us from making progress? On the journey toward Passion – what if we were aware that the easiest thing for us to do when we walk out of this room is to do nothing. The path of least resistance is to continue doing things at home and at work in the exact same manner as we have in the past. But wouldn’t you agree? Growth. Growth my friends, is found here. Outside your comfort zone.
How many can really say
I don’t like it. Well you haven’t even tried it!!

Half and half – first half let them do personal
Second half ask them to list all the things they would do for their members if there were no limits

MACE: As you evaluate your strengths as a staff and you begin to hone in on the things that you are going to do in 2017 and beyond for your members, we must keep an eye on the strength zone and ensure that we as a chamber staff are properly equipped to deliver a quality service.

What if we got more intentional in our workplace culture allowing our people to expand their pie? What if we made this part of the mentality when it comes to team member development and growth? Because nobody wants to end up at age 49 like my father, after he sold out of farming and started applying for jobs. Night after night at the dinner table on the farm he would talk about the jobs he applied for in Big Stone county, at the agronomy department, at the extension office, at the corn processing plant. But nobody wanted a middle aged failed farmer who was almost 50 who only had one skill. What are your undiscovered strengths? What are the things you’d like to try at your company and are we as leaders asking those questions of our people so that we can put them in positions that honor their strengths?
MY JOURNEY THROUGH STEPS 1-4
What would happen around your office if you purposely sought out someone who you think is in this place right now. Maybe a young professional in their 20’s or early 30’s. What would happen if those of you with gray hair took them out to lunch? What would happen if instead of rolling our eyes and saying that we just don’t understand these millennials – what if we deliberately forged relationships with these young people and came alongside them in a mentoring capacity to help them through this phase of life.
MACE: How many have members who have been with you 5 years and longer?
How many have new members who are 5 years or newer?
What kind of programs can we offer for these mature companies to mentor our younger entrepreneurs… send the elevator back down?

30 some countries, all 50 states. I’m 35. Remember? If I can do it, you can too. I know not all of you want to travel. But some of you do. What are we waiting for? While I lived on the island of Oahu in Honolulu I sent a message to all my closest friends and said, you have to get here to these islands. I lived in Waikiki Beach and I told a story about how I would see the 85 year old couple crossing the street to the beach. I told my friends that when I would see this couple I would rejoice but also I would shed a tear. Most people save their entire lives to get to Hawaii just once. Hawaii is a once in a lifetime trip for many people. I was happy that this couple had finally made it. But I was sad as well. Because for them, it was too late. Too late to enjoy all the islands have to offer. Too late to hike the beautiful peaks. Too late to surf the legendary Hawaiian waves. It was too late. What if you decided it wasn’t too late for you? What if you adopted the mentality that the time is now and we can’t wait any longer. Let me tell you something that might ruffle some feathers with some of you because it’s a REAL issue. I’m 35. My generation, my friends, my sister and I? We don’t want any of mom and dad’s money. Your generation wants to pass something on and leave a legacy. Honestly, think silently to yourself and just nod your head if you know of someone in your life whose family has had a rift because of an inheritance dispute amongst survivors. Spend the money. We want you to see this stuff. We want you to live it up while you still can. Step 5 is titled “Don’t stop until you find your passion” but maybe for many of us the step should be, “Just start.”
MACE: If you allow your staff members at the chamber to lean-in to their passion for their members then they will never leave you
Passion Burnout5 years Questions
MACE: Two things: let your staff progress through these 8 steps and allow them to reignite the passion for the work they do – and take the money and run
But also your members – If you can somehow find a way to increase their profits and revenue streams through the member services provided by your chamber, TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN!
Passion Burnout5 years Questions
MACE: Let’s bring it back to you. Someone is going to do everything on your list. When it comes to your members, someone or some company is going to do everything on their list. The bucket list that your members have, the services and support that they are going to need to take their company to the next level… they are going to have someone do that for them or alongside them. It might as well be you who provides that level of service and support.
If you think you’re beaten, you are. If you think you dare not... you don’t.
If you like to win but think you can’t, it’s almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost, for out in the world we find.
Success begins with a fellow’s will... it’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you’re out-classed, you are, you’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to think high of yourself, before you can win the prize.
Life’s battles don’t always go, to the stronger or faster man...
But sooner or later the one who wins, is the one who thinks he can.
