Pharming is a form of online fraud very similar to phishing where the cyber criminals rely upon false websites for the theft
of confidential information. However, where phishing entices a user through bait in the form of a phony email or link,
pharming redirects a victim to a fabricated site even if the correct web address was typed into their browser.
It’s All An Illusion
Like the creation of an elaborate illusion, the time, energy and resources required for the production are large, but yield
a much larger payout. It is for this reason that pharming attacks are beginning to escalate and evolve since traditional
anti-virus software and spyware removal software cannot protect against these types of breaches.
Pharming attacks rely on redirecting Internet domain name requests to false websites using techniques like Domain
Slamming and Domain Expiration. These fake websites look very similar, and many times, even identical to the legitimate
website leading to security breaches that are virtually transparent to the victim and allow attackers to gain unauthorized
access to sensitive company information and systems, which may later be used to commit fraud and identity theft.
