Jeans for Genes day!
   Friday 7 th October

We’re changing the world for children with genetic disorders.
All you have to do is wear your jeans.
Facts about genetic disorders

It is estimated that 2.8m people in the UK are affected by rare genetic disorders*
                                      (2m are affected by cancer)

An estimated 1 in 25 children born in the UK is affected by a genetic disorder / birth defect, that
equates to more than 30,000 babies born in the UK each year

There are more than 4,500 recognised genetic disorders

Genetic disorders are the biggest cause of death for children aged 14 and under

what is Jeans for genes day?

Thousands of children and adults pay £1 / £2 to wear
their jeans to school or work on Jeans for Genes Day
Our supporters
Today, we have a database of 100,000 supporters from work places to schools across the UK.
How we spend donations
All of the net income raised by Jeans for Genes each year is distributed amongst charities
dedicated to supporting individual genetic disorders.
These charities provide vital care and support services for affected children and families, as well
as ongoing research into these conditions.
Projects funded in 2010
Chronic Granulomatous Disorder Research We help to fund a variety of projects including a psychological support
Trust service and CGD clinical nurse specialists.
Genetic Alliance UK A coordinator for families living with Sydrome Without a Name (SWAN).
Jeans for Genes supports several research projects each year, from PhD
Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's research grants to ongoing work by senior academics at the Jeans for
Charity Genes Centre for Inherited Diseases.
Headlines Craniofacial Support Jeans for Genes is funding a workshop with horses. Gentle and non-
judgemental, the animals will also help the children develop their non-
                                              verbal communication.
Ichthyosis Support Group Jeans for Genes is giving the ISG a grant towards its national conference.
Families can meet and know they're not alone. And the children can see
                                              others who look like them.
International Costello Syndrome Support We're proud to be helping families with Costello syndrome come
Group together for the very first time in the UK at their first annual retreat.
Boys and men can have low self confidence because of the differences in
Klinefelter's Syndrome Association their bodies and they can find social situations difficult. We are funding
an activity weekend; which will make a dramatic difference to how boys
and young men feel about themselves.
With our help, the MGA are setting up an outreach programme. One of
Myasthenia Gravis Association its key aims will be to help families get the educational support their
children need and are entitled to at school.
Currently projects include a five year research programme at Oxford
The Primary Immunodeficiency Association University and the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals and comprehensive support
and advocacy activities for children and adults.
Jeans for Genes provides funding to the MPS Society each year. It's
The Society for Mucopolysaccharide Diseases invested in research to find treatments for some of the 21 different MPS
conditions. It also supports regional clinics for families.
We are funding a workshop for young people. They can share their
Sickle Cell and Young Stroke Survivors experiences, learn how to be healthy and their families can share their
                                              worries.
