Module 6 Assignment 2 Jeannie M. Weltzin 12/06/2010 Substance Abuse Treatment in Criminal Justice System PSY494 Instructor:  Adria Adams Argosy University
Michael’s Treatment Plan Michael has done very well in the prison setting. He is a model prisoner and he is ready to re-enter the outside world through the half-way house program that we are offering him .
Family Michael has been working on his relationship with his parents and other family members through letters, phone calls and also visits at the prison. I believe that it would be beneficial for Michael’s treatment plan to include family counseling so that Michael and his family can deal with issues that may arise when he is released from the prison environment. By working together with his family “Parents” Michael and his parents may be able to work through some issues that Michael has displayed as being important to his recovery.
12 step program Michael needs to be involve in a 12 step program that will help him to accomplish his goals of becoming a recovered substance abuser. Michael needstobe in a group setting so that he can learn from others in the program. This may include not only good behaviors but also bad behaviors that Michael should stay clear of.
Michael’s Education Michael’s desire to finish his education has become a very important part of Michael’s treatment plan in the prison setting. At this time Michael is taking internet courses and I believe that it would be beneficial for Michael to finish the courses that he is in at the time and then en-role in a classroom setting for the rest of his education.
Michael’s Job Training Michael will need help returning to the workforce therefore I recommend that Michael be en-rolled in a job training program that could help him find out what the workforce has to offer him.

  1. “Half-Way House Programs: These programs emerged in the mental health treatment community and are called half-way house programs because their objective is to take the offender-clients half-way between the stage of being hospitalized and the stage of living independently in the community. The duration of these programs usually varies from three months to a year. These programs are administered mostly in private treatment agencies and require a group of 5 to 30 clients residing together, all of whom are receiving substance abuse treatment or are in a program of recovery. The residents should remain “clean and sober” during the program. Most of the clients of half-way house programs are in school or work and have legitimate daytime responsibilities. Half-way houses have staff for assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, monitoring, and aftercare planning. Under these programs, residents are required to follow a recovery plan. These programs usually involve counseling, job training, 12-step participation, and volunteer work or service to the house or to the community agencies. Many half-way house programs are combined with services such as meditation, massage, yoga, and herbal regimens.”(Argosy 2010)
  2. “The focus of family therapy treatment is to intervene in these complex relational patterns and to alter them in ways that bring about productive change for the entire family. Family therapy rests on the systems perspective. It is important to understand the complex role that families can play in substance abuse treatment. They can be a source of help to the treatment process, but they also must manage the consequences of the (client’s) addictive behavior. Meeting the challenge of working together will call for mutual understanding, flexibility, and adjustments among the substance abuse treatment provider, family therapist, and family.”(Substance Abuse Treatment and Family Therapy 2004)
  3. “Here are the Twelve Steps in the original form from Alcoholics Anonymous. Groups that are focused on drugs reword them a bit but retain their essential meanings. The ideal of a Twelve step group is that each of it's members grows to believe and then live through deeds each of the twelve steps. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol in that our lives had become unmanageable Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs Were entirely ready to have God remove all of these defects of character Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all Made direct amends to such people wherever possible except when doing so would injure them or others Continued to take moral inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”(Alcohol and Substance Abuse 12 Step Programs (AA/NA/CA/MA) and other Peer Support Groups 2005)
  4. Education is an important goal for Michael. “Education programs help promote inmates’ welfare and this extends to the society as well. A study conducted by the US Department of Education, spearheaded by Stephen J. Steurer of the Correctional Education Association, revealed that inmates who took classes while in prison, either vocational training or classes at high school or college level, are less likely to go back to prison within the first three years of release.”(Education in Prison: Benefits of Inmate Education Program)
  5. It is important that Michael learn what the world has to offer him in all realms of his life. Michael has started down a great path in the prison setting but he needs to learn how to accomplish his goals in the real world. Michael’s motivation to work out his substance abuse, family, and educational set backs has been inspirational and I believe that with the prober guidance Michael will be able to find a job that suits him and continue his treatment with little if no set backs.
