A general type of legal system that has been (and is still being) used in socialist and formerly socialist
states is known as socialist law or Soviet law. With significant additions and modifications from Marxist-
Leninist ideology, it is based on the civil law system. Whether socialist law ever constituted a distinct
legal system is a matter of debate. If so, socialist law would have been among the most important legal
systems in the world by the time the Cold War ended.
