anyplace and at anytime, as well as providing and
maintaining exceptional facilities for the evolving
education, research and service needs of UNM and the

UNM’s mission to service as New Mexico’s flagship
institution of higher learning through demonstrated and
growing excellence in teaching, research, patient care,
and community service.

• Enabling students in the use of information and informatics
• By offering extensive and user-centered electronic services
• Being a desired destination by providing functional and attractive
physical places
• Ensuring that our employees have the necessary skills and tools to
serve the evolving needs of our customers

Student Worker
Expectations
Do’s & Do-Not’s
• Schedules will be made according to the needs of the
library.
• New hires are subject to a 60 day probationary period.
• Students must take at least a 30 minute unpaid (clock out)
meal break for every six hours of continuous work.
• Student employees are due a fifteen-minute paid (do not
clock out) rest period within every four hours of scheduled
continuous work.
• Students are only allowed to work 8 hours per day.
Student Employment
• Arrive promptly and prepared to work for your scheduled
shift.
• Please be sure to put on a student badge while clocked in.
• If you cannot make your shift let a staff member know at
least 2 hours before scheduled shift and get coverage from
another student if possible.
• Be respectful to the library, this department, your co-
workers and supervisors.
• Be respectful and always be attentive! Providing good
service is a top priority.
Attendance & Conduct
Your Schedule & Communication
• You are responsible for knowing your schedule!
• Write it down!
• Double-check the Student Calendar.
• Ask the staff if you’re unsure.
• If you cannot make it on-time to your shift, it is your
responsibility to speak to a staff member or student
supervisor.
• Your UNM email will be the main way in which we
communicate with you – you’re expected to check it
daily!
Why is a Standard of Appearance Important?
General dress, grooming, and personal cleanliness standards
contribute to the morale of all employees and affect the
service image that the University Libraries presents. With
shared work and public environments, we enjoy a casual
dress code here at UNM and within the UL. However,
“casual” dress deserves the same attention to detail as a
traditional business or office wardrobe – “casual” is not the
same as “student casual” attire.
Dress Code
What is NOT appropriate casual dress?
• Wrinkled, stained or dirty clothing
• Revealing tops, tube tops, muscle shirts or short shorts
• Garments with large tears or holes
• Undershirts and other attire meant to be worn as
undergarments
• Clothing with offensive messages or graphics
• Garments that are transparent, revealing or too tight
• Hats or other head gear that restricts your ability to clearly
have eye contact with patrons or their ability to have eye
contact with you.
When in Doubt: Ask Your Supervisor!
Dress Code
Behaviors to Avoid
• Do not engage in activities that distract you from providing
excellent customer care. The customer comes first.
• Do not wear headphones at the service desks and within
view of customers.
• Do not eat at the desk; this includes anywhere within view of
a customer.
• Do not congregate in large groups and talk loudly.
Remember you work in a library where lots of people are
concentrating.
Ask yourself –
• Is there a customer at the counter? Help them!
• Have you completed your work-responsibilities for this
shift? Are there any tasks left undone you can finish up?

Notas do Editor

  1. Because the UL is also a college our library administration is organized in the same manner as any other departmental structure, including an Office of the Dean that manages the various functions and departments within the UL. As a library employee, you may need to direct patrons to this office on a regular basis.
  2. The Dean of the Library is Richard Clement, who assumed his responsibilities this past summer. His office is located in the Dean’s Suite at Zimmerman Library. While he may not be a visible part of your workday in the UL, he is an important person to recognize.
  3. As a student employee, looking professional as well as being clearly recognizable as a library employee on duty will most effectively help our patrons
  4. Please consider exercise clothing such as yoga pants items that are best worn in a non-work setting.
