1. City Approves Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Water treatment plant in the heart of Etobicoke.
TORONTO, July. 13, 2015 /CNW/ - Have you noticed a musty smell coming from your
taps? Do not be alarmed, this happens often in many urban cities in the Golden
Horseshoe when naturally occurring algae forms on the lower Great Lakes. The water is
perfectly safe to drink. The algae is harmless to people, animals, plants and the
manufacturing process. It is also part of the food chain in the lake. Biologists say the
algae becomes dormant when the water temperature falls below 20 degrees Celsius. To
combat the algae, Toronto City Council has approved a much needed major upgrade of
its water treatment facility. The upgrade will take three years to complete. The cost will
be $32 million. Half the cost for the project will be paid by the federal government,
another 25 per cent will be shouldered by the Province of Ontario. Toronto will pay its
share by increasing property taxes by 0.5 per cent, across the board. This summer will
be hot, show your support for the upgrade.
