YEARS AND COUNTING:
CELEBRATING TOGETHER &
BUILDING COMMUNITY
Ask just about anyone that grew up
here and they will tell you there’s no
place like Squantum when it comes to
celebrating the 4th! Each year the
parade is a highlight as young
participants dress up in costume to
walk the parade route and streets
compete to win bragging rights for the
best float. The celebration continues
with frozen treats and an awards
ceremony at Wendall Moses Park,
behind the school. After a day of
cookouts and family reunions, folks line
the seawall along Dorchester Street for
the best view of the fireworks over
Boston Harbor.
THE JULY 4TH PARADE IS
A CHERISHED TRADITION
Two more recent, but no less treasured,
traditions are the annual Squantum 5 Road
Race which takes place in the Summer and
raises funds for the Dana Farber Marathon
Challenge. In the Fall, the family oriented
Turkey Trot happens on Thanksgiving
morning with proceeds going to support
the 4th of July parade.

Having a school nestled in among residences
provides a vitality to the neighborhood that reaches
far beyond the schoolroom. Drive by Squantum
Elementary School on any given morning and you
will see parents lingering to chat long after the bell
has rung. After school, Carmine’s Cafe bustles with
activity as families gather for a slice of pizza and kids
line up to buy “slushies.” During the warmer
months, children walk or ride their bikes between
home and the newly renovated playground. Young
and old alike set up lawn chairs on the fields behind
the school and watch t-ball, little league, or softball
games and practices for the championship
“Squantum Storm” football team and cheerleaders.

THERE’S MORE TO EXPLORE AT THE SHORE
WHEN YOUR BACKYARD IS
THE OCEAN YOU’RE GOING
TO WANT TO COME OUT
AND PLAY
Connecting with nature is important for young
and old alike. Whether it’s a hike on Squaw
Rock or paddling a kayak in Dorchester Bay,
living on the ocean will provide
endless opportunities to
venture outdoors. Take a
walk along the sandbar
at Orchard Beach
and you may come
home with some
sea glass in your
pocket. Low tide
is also the best
time for catching a

creatures that live in

periwinkles, clams and
even oysters thrive on our
coast. The salt marshes attract a variety
of fascinating birds. Each year, residents hope
to be the first to claim a sighting of the osprey
returning to his perch. In the Spring, flocks of
egrets line the shores of the causeway
while a sharp shinned hawk scouts
for prey. Originally used as a
naval airfield, Squantum
Point Park is an idyllic
place for bird watching.
Open year round, this
recreational spot
offers a fishing pier,
walking trails, and

NATURE
HISTORY
Celebrated aviator, Amelia Earhart helped finance the creation of
Dennison Airport, which later became the Squantum Naval
Air Station. She was a passenger on the first official flight
out of Dennison and logged many hours as a pilot there.
It was a popular destination for airshows and attracted
spectators and distinguished visitors from near and far.
During WW II the airfield played a vital role in the war
effort by serving as a training ground for Navy and
Marine Corps pilots and by providing advanced training
for British Royal Navy torpedo and dive bomber squadrons
and for US Navy carrier air groups. It also served as a patrol
base protecting the local waters from German submarines.

IS THE AGE OF AMELIA EARHART WHEN SHE

SEVERAL
STREETS STILL
BEAR THE
FAMILY NAMES
OF LOTTA
CRABTREE
Lotta Crabtree, darling of the
American stage during the era
of burlesque, spent much of
her later years in Squantum. It
is said that she believed the
climate here would be
beneficial to the health of her
brother, Ashworth and their
horses. A stone for one of her
horses still exists on Livesey
Road.
Not much is known about Squanto’s early years but historians agree that his
assistance was vital to the survival of the Plymouth colonists. He is credited with
teaching the Pilgrims native methods for the cultivation and fertilization of corn. He
was taken to England where he was taught English and was trained to serve as an
interpreter. In 1621 he accompanied Myles Standish to visit tribal chief,
Chickatawbut, at Moswetuset Hummock, located at the head of the present day
causeway entering Squantum.

Boston Harbor Islands
Many of the Boston Harbor
Islands are accessible by private
boat and are open for public
recreation. Attractions include
hiking and biking trails, beaches,
overnight camping, a civil war
era fort (Fort Warren) located on
Georges Island and Boston Light
on Little Brewster Island. No
boat? No worries. The islands
are also accessible by public
transportation and a ferry
system. For more information
visit bostonharborislands.org.
Bus Route 211 • Red Line (North Quincy)
Some days it’s easy to forget that Squantum is actually part of a
much bigger city and that it’s situated just minutes away from a
major metropolis. Small town living is great but when the Big City
beckons, and you don’t feel like driving, all you have to do is hop on
the 211 and you're on your way!

EVERYONE HAS A FAVORITE SPOT
The ocean is always changing…low tide, high tide,
stormy days or calm. We each have a favorite time of
day and a favorite spot for viewing the majesty of the
sea. Squantum offers many such vantage points, Squaw
Rock, Orchard Beach, Nickerson Beach and “The Cove”.
Most of these spots are relatively secluded and low
traffic. On those days when you want a little more
action all you have to do is head out the Causeway to
visit Wollaston Beach. You can grab some fried clams
or an ice cream cone while you’re there. If it's a
romantic dinner you’re after than go no farther then
Marina Bay for a stroll on the boardwalk and your
choice of fine dining.
