Inmate Work Crew:
Saving the County Dollars
The Sheriff’s Office initiated an Inmate Work Program
through the New River Valley Jail in 2011.
Over the past
four years, several
thousand hours of
work have been
completed which has
saved the taxpayers
thousands
of dollars.

• Clearing the V.D.O.T. right of ways and brush cutting on
several state roads
• Built new weight room at Narrows High School
• New locker room at the Narrows football field
• At the agricultural lab at Giles High School they have built
new out buildings and several acres of fencing
• Painted several rooms and re-tiled
the flooring in several buildings in
Giles County including the schools
• Assisting the Giles County
Maintenance Department with
making repairs, mowing, etc…….

due to the increased numbers of narcotic search warrants as well as other
high risk warrant service situations.

informational programs to the Seniors.

agencies conduct drug search at
local schools.
*Members: Sheriff Millirons, investigators,
school resource officers representatives from
schools central office, school principals,
guidance counsellors, and local police
department.
*Created to form a partnership between
the Sheriff’s Office and members of the
Giles County Schools to improve safety
*The team works together to identify
those individuals in the school system
that may be withdrawn, violent, or
otherwise mentally distressed and to
identify safety issues involving the
buildings and grounds.

Giles County Sheriff’s Office received Safety Pup from the
National Child Safety Council. Safety Pup is used for educating
the children in making good decisions and being safe.

taught D.A.R.E. in Giles County
from 1991 through 1995.

speech to the D.A.R.E.

McClaugherty/Middle School.
Each student that completes the
D.A.R.E. program receives a
certificate and t-shirt.

Rape Aggression Defense: RAD
Sheriff Millirons began this program at the
Giles Sheriff’s Office in 2009.
Giles is one of few sheriff offices
in Southwest Virginia to teach this course.
*RAD is a class that teaches
defensive techniques to female
students.
*RAD has been taught to many
teachers and other females
throughout Giles County.
More than 400 individuals have taken
the training and completed the course.
The Sheriff’s Office
working together
with other
organizations to
educate our youth.
Giles Sheriff’s Office assist the SADD/ YOVASO clubs at Giles High School
during a mock wreck to bring awareness to the students on the dangers of
alcohol, drugs, and texting while driving.

  • 12. * Over 500 drug related indictments since 2008. Putting The Cuffs on Drugs: Deputy Jason Tickle inventories items from a meth lab that were seized during a traffic stop. Since taking office in 2008, Sheriff Millirons has taken an aggressive approach to putting the cuffs on drugs.

  • 19. Inmate Work Crew: Saving the County Dollars The Sheriff’s Office initiated an Inmate Work Program through the New River Valley Jail in 2011. Over the past four years, several thousand hours of work have been completed which has saved the taxpayers thousands of dollars.

Inmate Work Crew • Clearing the V.D.O.T. right of ways and brush cutting on several state roads • Built new weight room at Narrows High School • New locker room at the Narrows football field • At the agricultural lab at Giles High School they have built new out buildings and several acres of fencing • Painted several rooms and re-tiled the flooring in several buildings in Giles County including the schools • Assisting the Giles County Maintenance Department with making repairs, mowing, etc…….

  • 22. * Sponsored by Giles Sheriff’s Office and Giles County RSVP * As of spring 2015, 1,068 pounds of unused medication has been collected. Drug Take Back Sheriff Millirons, Sgt. Chad Tickle, Deputy Tootie Gillispie, and Captain Joe Shanks proudly display the collection of drugs collected.
  • 23. Drug Take Back: Keeping Drugs off the Streets and out of the New River RSVP volunteers Mrs. Clowers, Gail Vaught, Lt. Andy Metro, Sheriff Millirons, Pearisburg Police Dept. Officer Chad Journell, and Captain Joe Shanks displays unused medication collected.
  • 25. Emergency Response Team E.R.T. The Sheriff’s Office developed its own Emergency Response Team due to the increased numbers of narcotic search warrants as well as other high risk warrant service situations. *Team consists of deputies and officers from departments in the local jurisdiction *Allows for a faster tactical response to certain situations *Members have been trained and certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services *Monthly training *Assists surrounding jurisdictions during joint investigations
  • 26. Sgt. Chad Tickle and Sheriff Millirons accept the DMV most improved award for Click It or Ticket Campaign. Two awards have been given to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office since 2008 from DMV. NRCJ training academy Director Marty Alford and Sheriff Millirons present Sgt. Mark Skidmore with the Director’s Award. Awards Presented to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office since 2008.
  • 27. Giles County Sheriff’s Office has been recognized for outstanding and dedicated service to the safety of the children in Giles County by the National Child Safety Council for the past 8 years. National Child Safety Council
  • 28. MILLLIRONS: Lawman of the Year for 2012 by the Renew the New River Committee Sheriff Millirons, along with his family, is presented Lawman of the Year award from the Renew the New River Committee. County Administrator Chris McKlarney presents Sheriff Millirons with Lawman of the Year award.

  • 40. CODE RED Reversed 911 System: Allows the Sheriff’s Department to notify the citizens in Giles County about emergency occurrences that are in progress. Times when used: • Wanted Person • Road Closures • Power Outages • Weather Conditions • Missing Person • School Closures Citizens should register home lines and cell phones by calling the Sheriff’s Office 540-921-3842. Dispatcher Gabe Caldwell is ready to take your call and offer assistance.
  • 41. Project Lifesaver Tracking system for individuals with special needs. …. For example: Alzheimer’s, Autism, etc. * Individuals are given bracelet-style transmitter in case of wandering off. *When alerted a deputy immediately goes to the location and starts tracking the patient. *Average time to locate an individual is less than twenty-five minutes. Deputy Melvin Dalton demonstrates the Project Lifesaver transmitter.

Public Awareness Sheriff Millirons and the Sheriff’s Office are continually keeping the citizens of Giles County aware of events occurring in the county through newspaper articles as well as presentations with clubs, churches, groups, festivals, and organizations. Sheriff Millirons discusses the Neighborhood Watch program with citizens of White Gate.
  • 43. Sheriff Millirons listens along with the citizens as Captain Joe Shanks shares Fatal Crash Facts during a church presentation. Sheriff Millirons fingerprints a young child during Festival in the Park.
  • 44. S. A. L. T. SENIORS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TOGETHER Every other month the Sheriff’s Office provides informational programs to the Seniors. Topics include: *home safety *drug and alcohol awareness *telephone safety *internet safety *scam awareness *dangers of strangers entering their home
  • 45. Sheriff Millirons, 911 Supervisor John Davis, and Captain Joe Shanks prepare a meal for the Seniors at the Giles County Senior Citizens. Sheriff’s Office provides Bi-monthly programs for the Senior Citizens Sheriff Millirons shares with the Seniors information concerning active scam in Giles County.

School Resource Officers School Safety Assessment Team Giles County Sheriff’s Office with the help of surrounding agencies conduct drug search at local schools. *Members: Sheriff Millirons, investigators, school resource officers representatives from schools central office, school principals, guidance counsellors, and local police department. *Created to form a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and members of the Giles County Schools to improve safety *The team works together to identify those individuals in the school system that may be withdrawn, violent, or otherwise mentally distressed and to identify safety issues involving the buildings and grounds.
  • 49. Educating the Children Sheriff Millirons and Deputy Tootie Gillispie give the children from a local day care center a tour of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • 50. SAFETY PUP Giles County Sheriff’s Office received Safety Pup from the National Child Safety Council. Safety Pup is used for educating the children in making good decisions and being safe.
  • 51. Safety Pup In Action! SRO Sgt. Chris Neice and Safety Pup are caught in action with the children learning about stranger danger. Sheriff Millirons poses with Safety Pup while visiting Eastern Elementary/Middle school.
  • 52. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) D.A.R.E. Graduates from Macy McClaugherty/Middle School celebrate with SRO Deputy Teddy Vaughn. • This program is taught t0 all 6th grade students in the Giles County School System. “Teaching students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives” *Sheriff Millirons is extremely proud of this program for he taught D.A.R.E. in Giles County from 1991 through 1995.
  • 53. Sheriff Millirons gives a speech to the D.A.R.E. graduates at Macy McClaugherty/Middle School. Each student that completes the D.A.R.E. program receives a certificate and t-shirt.
  • 55. Rape Aggression Defense: RAD Sheriff Millirons began this program at the Giles Sheriff’s Office in 2009. Giles is one of few sheriff offices in Southwest Virginia to teach this course. *RAD is a class that teaches defensive techniques to female students. *RAD has been taught to many teachers and other females throughout Giles County. More than 400 individuals have taken the training and completed the course.
  • 56. The Sheriff’s Office working together with other organizations to educate our youth. Giles Sheriff’s Office assist the SADD/ YOVASO clubs at Giles High School during a mock wreck to bring awareness to the students on the dangers of alcohol, drugs, and texting while driving.
