2. The hit TV show Mad Men has ended, but leading man Don
Draper remains in the spotlight in the form of men’s wardrobe choices.
Jon Hamm’s character inspired men of all ages to improve their
clothing choices and grooming routines. As a result, retailers are
gaining more than what they imagined.
According to Mary Brett, Senior Vice President of Kantar Retail,
today’s millennials are more interested in fashion and grooming, which
are relevant factors in boosting the retail sector. Due to the new
demand from the male sector, retailers which were historically focused
on women began branching out their brands and offering products for
men.
3. The Newest Fashion Demographic
October’s “Men at Work“ summit, hosted by Cowen &
Company, revealed the newest target market of companies such
as Saks Fifth Avenue, Sotheby’s and Lululemon Athletica: men.
The report, led by Oliver Chen, declared that today’s men
are the new targets of retail fashion innovations – in the same
way that women were years ago. Men’s apparel is now worth $63
billion and growing.
“The men’s apparel market is in the middle innings of a five-
year cycle of outperforming growth in the overall market as the
sub-sector is following similar patterns as the women sector,
including greater interest in more personalized style versus
wearing more of a “uniform”; new styles of suiting and work attire
with a more casual, modern tailoring look; and a permanent trend
towards incorporating performance aspects in apparel,” according
to the report.
Not Just Clothes, Grooming Items Too
The trend does not stop with designer shoes, expensive gym
wear or even putting a suit for work. Millennial men are now
paying attention to interesting grooming products as well.
Surprisingly, they are buying by the box.
4. In 2011, Birchbox, a beauty subscription service, offered a
holiday line for their male customers, which sold out rapidly. Due to
the growing demand, the company opened a men-only branch to
better accommodate their customers.
Suit Up! Why Clothing Matters
Generation Y male consumers are now pursuing items that will
improve their looks. Today, appearances are their best asset when it
comes to keeping things interesting and staying employed. They
channel their inner Don Draper in order to impress and elevate their
status in society.
Women are not the only ones reigning supreme in the field of
fashion. With more men following Don Draper’s footsteps, men’s
apparel retailers can look forward to an increase in their sales.
