• Exact Word or Phrase
“Use quotes to search for an exact word or set of words”
e.g. “Knowledge management” 27.200.000 Results

• Exclude a word
Add a dash (-) before a word(s) to exclude all results that include that
word(s)
e.g. "knowledge management" -expert system

• Include similar word(s)
Add a tilde sign (~) immediately in front of a word to search for that
word as well as even more synonyms

Specify synonyms or alternative forms with an uppercase OR or | (vertical bar)
e.g. literacy OR learning

• Search within a site or domain
• Include "site:" to search for information within a single website
e.g. "knowledge management" site:www.loc.gov
Results are retrieved from LOC website Only!
• Include “allinurl:” to search for term anywhere in URL
e.g. allinurl:Knowledge management
Results are displayed with knowledge management in the URL

• Search within a site or domain
• Include “allintitle:“to search for information in the title of the webpage
• Include “allintext:“to search for information in the text of the webpage
• Include “allinanchor:“to search for information in the links of the
webpage
e.g. allintitle:knowledge management
Results are displayed from webpages with title knowledge
management

• Search For Specific File
• Include “filetype:" to search for a particular type of document
e.g. knowledge management filetype:pdf
Results are display for pdf document

• Search for a number range
Include two periods (with no spaces) to see results that contain
numbers in a given range of things like dates, prices, and
measurements (include unit of measure)
e.g. knowledge management 2010..2013
Results are display for webpages dated between 2010 and 2013
canon $20..$50
Results are displayed for Canon Camera pricing between 20 and 50
US Dollars

• The Star Operator
Use *, an asterisk character, known as a wildcard, to match one or
more words in a phrase (enclosed in quotes)
e.g. “knowledge * management”

• Instead of Search Operators Advanced
search does it all
We can use any or all of the following filters
• Language
• Region
• Last updated date
• Site or domain
• Where the search terms appear on the page
• SafeSearch filter turned on or off
• Reading level
• File type
• Usage rights

click a filtering option to customize the
search results

• Web: By default, your Google search will show unfiltered results that
can include all the types of content below.
• Images: See only results from Google Images.
• Maps: See only results from Google Maps.
• Videos: See only video results from YouTube.
• News: See only results from Google News.
• Books: See only results from Google Books, including reviews,
excerpts, and where you can buy the book…
