Jamie created a reflection diary documenting their progress over 6 weeks while creating a music video for their FMP project. In week 1, they decided to challenge themselves by making an improved music video. Weeks 2-4 involved initial planning, research on existing music videos, audience surveys, and developing a shot list. Week 5 involved the first filming location but poor lighting impacted footage. In week 6, Jamie edited footage and realized more was needed, so they filmed additional shots to add pace and fill gaps in the story.
2. Week 1
• Within the first week of starting the FMP I had to find what kind of media I
wanted to do, I finally came to a decision to make a music video as it was
something I enjoyed the most during the year and I wanted to challenge
myself by making a really good MV, because with my last one I was new to
premiere pro and the course and I know I can produce something better
than that.
• Once I had a rough idea as to what I wanted to do I made the pre proposal
which included my plans in what I was wanting to achieve in this project.
After I completed my pre proposal I looked into key influences and with
this I already knew of many people that have influenced me to make a
music video, but I am also inspired by their specific type of music video
therefore it is something that I take inspiration from and wanting to create
something that is within a similar category.
3. Week 2
• In week 2 I had covid so I was unable to attend college, therefore I
decided to just touch up and work on the initial plans ppt that I was
completing the week prior. I decided to do this because I felt as if it
was unfinished and I could of included more. Such as the mood board
analysis, I felt as if it was lacking information and I could of added
more.
4. Week 3
• Week 3 I moved onto the Research and I decided to jump straight into the existing products, I found this
partially challenging as felt as if I was writing something similar in nearly every slide however I was later told
that it wasn’t a bad thing because If I was writing something similar each time then its something that I will
most likely include in my own MV.
• I also completed my target audience profile, this was something that I found confusing at first however I
asked the teacher which then allowed me to understand what I needed to complete and how to complete it.
• I looked at different locations that I could possibly be filming at and I noted down certain places that I think
would work with my idea and what kind of vibe I am going for. The first location I thought of was a castle
that is near my dads house that I go to sometimes and I thought that It would have been perfect for my
music video because it is quite scenic and there was certain camera tricks that I wanted to try there. I then
wanted to film at a abandoned house near me as it fits the dark moody vibe that I am wanting to give out in
my video. I did struggle to think of different locations to film because there wasn’t many places that came to
mind when wanting to film my music video.
• Within this week I also looked into the survey and looked at the results from the audience and analysed the
data. I found that a lot of the answers were the same and they weren't too mixed which shocked me
because I was expecting to get mixed answers because of the way the questions were asked.
5. Week 4
• I started with the organisational planning and found that it helped me gain a better idea on what
my final outcome may look like
• I then completed the shot list and I felt like this was really helpful to me because it allowed me to
understand what different shots would look like and how long I would want the duration of the
shots to be
• Once I completed I started to think if they would actually work with the music video or not and
almost reflected on what I have just completed, after doing this I felt as if I was happy with the
shot list and knew that it would work well with the vibe that I was wanting to go for.
• In conclusion I felt as if this was very productive as I have now completed the planning process. I
now feel more comfortable going into production as I have a better idea on what I am wanting to
achieve, the planning schedule was something that I know will help me for production because I
will understand what days I will be doing what and how long I am expecting to spend on editing.
6. Week 5
• I started my journey to the first location of filming and had a pretty clear
idea as to where I was going to go to first and what shots I was going to
take first. This allowed the have a better understanding on what would
work for my video and what wouldn’t. I felt confident when performing to
the camera as there I picked a time where there wasn’t many people
around which therefore allowed me more time to concentrate on the task
at hand rather than worrying about people being in shot or looking at me
while I am performing. However, I did leave the time a bit too late because
around halfway through filming the sky started to get a lot darker and
looking back at the footage it's hard for you to actually be able to see me
and instead is just a dark image, this footage as become barely usable, and
I feel as if I wasted a day filming this.
7. Week 6
• I decided to edit the footage that I had gotten from the other day and
spent some time trying to get the footage all synced up properly to the
song, I soon found out that I was missing footage for certain parts of the
song and needed to go back out and film some more. This is where I went
off track regarding my plan as I thought I was going to have enough footage
from the other locations that I have been filming at, therefore I went
outside of lesson and got Flynn to help me film, I did have an idea already
that I wanted to film in the York College car park as it’s a dark area where I
could get some cool shots from there. Once I edited the new bits of
footage together, I felt as if I didn’t have enough going on and wanted the
music video to be at a faster pace, so I then went home and set up the
fisheye lens on my phone camera and decided to film myself in my
bedroom which would then be filling shots in my video.
