3. PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON
LEADERSHIP
• Leadership has as many styles as there are leaders
• I take inspiration from Plato and his thoughts on leadership, particularly that
those who do not want to lead are often the best leaders
• My personal style of leadership is best described as simple and plain-spoken, and
leading by example
• I feel having constant communication keeps all team members involved and
invested
• Like a chain, the team is as strong as its weakest link. A leader must empower and
engage all.

4. THOUGHTS ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A
SUCCESSFUL LEADER
• Be an effective communicator, but perhaps more importantly be a good listener
• Actions often say more than any words can ever say – lead by example
• Put people in the right fit for their skill set, and make each team member
accountable
• Display passion and drive everyday
• Let the team know their value
• Show empathy
• Celebrate successes!
5. PAST COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
• Village Water Board Commissioner
• Alumni Association Board Member
• Local Youth Sports Volunteer
• Church Finance Committee Member
• Church Council Member
6. COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES
• Budget Planning – As with most organizations, this is an ongoing process which
often requires making difficult choices
• Communication and Team Cooperation – This has been the key to accomplishing
yearly goals as well as building consensus for future projects
• Implementation of New Programs – This has often been a challenge because
many times people resist change. Effective leadership demonstrates the how to
and whys
• Making occasional difficult choices with personal – this has been a sometimes
delicate process, especially in a small town
8. EMPLOYMENT LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES
• Managing people as well as business – My peers and I often joked that managing the
business is the easier of the two
• Interviewing and assessing potential team members – I often felt that this was one of
the biggest challenges. It is difficult to evaluate a person in a 1/2 hour interview..
Preparation is paramount
• Training and onboarding new hires – Interestingly, I often felt I could tell if a new
team member was going to be an asset after their first week of employment simply by
their actions and responses
• Implementation and enforcing adherence to company policies
9. GOALS
• Lead people to success through empowerment
• Put people in what is a good match for their individual skill set
• Constantly communicate
• Lead by example
10. VISION
• Use past leadership experience to advise those beginning their employment path
• Assist people in finding the “right fit”
• Demonstrate to others the importance of goal setting
• Get to the point of actually helping people chose both an educational as well as
career path

12. SUMMARY
Throughout my lengthy working career I have experienced and witnessed many
different types of leadership, and have also been in several leadership positions
myself. What I have taken away from this is that to truly be an effective leader, one
must possess many of same qualities that make for a what we might refer to as
“good character” in everyday life. Such virtues as humility, empathy, listening,
sharing, and taking responsibility for ones words and actions are all imperative for
one to be a successful leader.
It is my hope to be able to use the knowledge I have gleaned to, in some way,
advise and steer others to success in both their personal and professional lives
