The French established several colonies in North America that failed due to disease, weather, or conflicts with other European powers. Many forts had to be abandoned because of bad weather and Indian attacks, such as a small group of French troops at Charlesfort on Parris Island, South Carolina who left after a year when not resupplied from France.
