- Why plan backups? As you already know, backups are copies of the database that can be used in the event of an accident that causes loss of data. In other words, the restoration of an Oracle database depends on the presence of these backups. The word accident may cover a range of various failures, including: -media failures, typically a disk crash In order to protect against disk failure, we use disk mirroring on most machines; but this data redundancy does not protect you against the other failures: -software failures, commonly known as software bugs. their origin might be the operating system, the database software or the application software. -human errors To err is human and DBAs as well as developers can inadvertently delete a database component. While we may not be able to predict these accidents, we must be prepared for outages that they cause. Let's now survey the various backups that can be performed on an Oracle Database.
- This slide discusses the costs of downtime- the impacts clearly affect 4 broad areas- namely financial costs, reputation, productivity, and top line revenue. Most importantly, whilst the relationship between the time of outage and revenue may be linear- i.e. they increase proportionally….reputation and financial losses increase exponentially with the increase in outage time- this is because it threatens the ability of the business to recover and damages reputation and relationships.
