INTRODUCTION TO THE
INTERNET
The first wide area network was first created in the 1960’s by scientists in the US department of
defensive as a way to share information. In the 1980’s the first ever international email was sent via
dial up networks. By 1995 the internet as know it know had become mainstream and started to be
used by millions of people. As of 2019 over 4.3 billion people use the internet everyday to

• Since the internet became mainstream in the early 1990’s it
has grown at a tremendous rate, according to Hosting
Tribunal. (2019).

With this massive growth in users came
technological advances enabling quicker
data transfer speeds in order to keep up
with the demand. This graph shows the

start of the internet.
HOW PEOPLE ACCESS THE
INTERNET
In order to access information on the internet consumers must use search browsers. These are the entry points to all the
data on the internet.
There are 3 types of searches
Transactional – Indicates intent to complete a transaction e.g. Online food delivery
Navigation – Seaches for specific information or webpages e.g. Best Restaurant in Dubai
Informational queries – Blogs, How-to, Step by step guides e.g. YouTube - how to cook

USED BY AUDIENCES
• Almost all consumers use one of three devices
to access these search engines, the desktop
computer, laptop and Mobile Phone.
• Computer & laptop usage is on the decline
while mobile usage is on the rise.

CLOSING SUMMARY
• The Internet has grown at a fast rate since its creation but this is mostly due to Social Media. The amount of time spent online per
person has increased almost 25% in just 2 years and is due to continue growing.
• We are heading in the direction of a video based global platform where all content consumed will be done via video and text will be
used less and less.
• The global population are using their mobile devices more and more every year due to content being designed specifically for ease of
consumption. Within the next few years devices that connect to the internet will likely all be mobile.
• With all this data comes a responsibility to not let it consume every part of our lives. If used correctly, in order to better yourself,
complete tasks and move forward in a positive direction everyday, it can be incredibly useful and powerful.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET The first wide area network was first created in the 1960’s by scientists in the US department of defensive as a way to share information. In the 1980’s the first ever international email was sent via dial up networks. By 1995 the internet as know it know had become mainstream and started to be used by millions of people. As of 2019 over 4.3 billion people use the internet everyday to consume information. Hosting Tribunal. (2019).
  • 3. EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNET • Since the internet became mainstream in the early 1990’s it has grown at a tremendous rate, according to Hosting Tribunal. (2019). 1995 16 Millions 2005 1 Billion 2011 2.267 Billion 2020 4.4 Billion Lee, X. (2019). With this massive growth in users came technological advances enabling quicker data transfer speeds in order to keep up with the demand. This graph shows the average internet speed growth since the start of the internet.
  • 4. HOW PEOPLE ACCESS THE INTERNET In order to access information on the internet consumers must use search browsers. These are the entry points to all the data on the internet. There are 3 types of searches Transactional – Indicates intent to complete a transaction e.g. Online food delivery Navigation – Seaches for specific information or webpages e.g. Best Restaurant in Dubai Informational queries – Blogs, How-to, Step by step guides e.g. YouTube - how to cook

DIGITAL DEVICES USED BY AUDIENCES • Almost all consumers use one of three devices to access these search engines, the desktop computer, laptop and Mobile Phone. • Computer & laptop usage is on the decline while mobile usage is on the rise. Mobile Consumptio n data Mobile consumption data has grown by 70% from 2016 to 2020 In 2019 there were 3.9 Billlion unique mobile internet users. The total was 4.3 billion worldwide internet users 52% of all website traffic is on Mobile Hosting Tribunal. (2019). As of 2018 desktop users are online for 144 minutes per day compared to 203 for mobile users

  • 11. CLOSING SUMMARY • The Internet has grown at a fast rate since its creation but this is mostly due to Social Media. The amount of time spent online per person has increased almost 25% in just 2 years and is due to continue growing. • We are heading in the direction of a video based global platform where all content consumed will be done via video and text will be used less and less. • The global population are using their mobile devices more and more every year due to content being designed specifically for ease of consumption. Within the next few years devices that connect to the internet will likely all be mobile. • With all this data comes a responsibility to not let it consume every part of our lives. If used correctly, in order to better yourself, complete tasks and move forward in a positive direction everyday, it can be incredibly useful and powerful. Thank You
