Question 7 – Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
When I completed my preliminary task, I found that I had some skill in using Adobe
Photoshop and taking the necessary photographs. As much as I thought I knew about the
software and taking good photos, I also knew that I could improve my skills so that my final
piece could be the best I could make it. I learnt better techniques for creating better
mastheads and editing my photos better. One of the most crucial improvements I feel that I
have made is the way in which I take photographs. The major points being that I have learnt
about the rule of thirds and the Guttenberg principle, this meant that I now have a different
and better view into how I compose and take my photographs. When completing my
preliminary task, I vaguely knew about both the rule of thirds and the Guttenberg principle
but I had struggled with applying it to my photographs to make them look more
professional. I now take much more consideration into the positioning of the model in my
shot, whether to use high key lighting to bring a brighter mood to the shot or use low key
lighting if I’m attempting to create a darker mood within the shot. Also the angles when I
take photos so that I can capture the best image possible, for example in some shots I used
a high angle, medium shot and for my double page spread, I used a medium long shot so
that you could see all of my artist in the shot. I believe that when looking at my preliminary
task in comparison to my final piece, the difference is notably better in terms of editing my
piece in Adobe Photoshop and quality of photographs.

I believe that when I look at the first preliminary task compared to my final pieces, there is a
clear overall improvement. Especially with taking photographs, the standard has improved.
There is an improvement in terms of looking at and taking consideration with the
application of the rule of thirds. In the preliminary task I thought my photos were of a good
standard but when I look at the photos I have used on my final pieces, there is quite a
significant difference in terms of quality.
