With the increasing demand for individuals entering the workforce with cloud computing experience, AWS Educate provides an academic gateway for the next generation of IT and cloud professionals. AWS Educate is Amazon’s global initiative to provide students and educators with the resources needed to greatly accelerate cloud-related learning endeavors and help power the entrepreneurs, workforce, and researchers of tomorrow. AWS Educate provides four pillars of resources — at no cost --to educational institutions, educators or students. These pillars include: AWS credits for free access to AWS technology; content provided by AWS and by renowned educators around the globe to help educators build new courses or inject into existing ones; training materials to help educators and students build competency on AWS and cloud computing; and collaboration tools to share best practices and connect the community. This webinar will provide you with an overview of this brand new global initiative, including: background on why we launched the program; a description of the program; its value proposition to educational institutions, educators, and students; and a demonstration of the AWS Educate resources.

Conventional load balancing schemes are efficient at increasing the utilization of CPU, memory, and disk I/O resources in a Distributed environment. Most of the existing load-balancing schemes ignore network proximity and heterogeneity of nodes. Load balancing becomes more challenging as load variation is very large and the load on each server may change dramatically over time, by the time when a server is to make the load migration decision, the collected load status from other servers may no longer be valid. This will affect the accuracy, and hence the performance, of the load balancing algorithms. All the existing methods neglect the heterogeneity of nodes and contextual load balancing. In this paper, context based load balancing and task allocation with network proximity of heterogeneous nodes will be discussed

This webinar explored the Guide to Implementing Digital Learning, a free web-based resource to support school and district leaders as they work to ensure that investments in digital learning spark positive results. GIDL includes six topic areas: planning, professional learning, content and software, broadband, devices and tech support. Each topic’s section includes background information, key considerations for implementation, resources and exemplars of digital learning in action. The webinar will explore how states and districts can empower and encourage educators to plan for and implement digital learning to improve students' learning experiences. Presenters shared how their states are supporting digital learning implementation and how they will leverage GIDL. Presenters: Christine Fox, Director of Educational Leadership and Research, SETDA Alex Macdonald, Director of Instructional Technology, Idaho Department of Education Ron Nieto, Deputy Superintendent of Technology, Florida Department of Education Candice Dodson, Director of eLearning, Indiana Department of Education

As cloud services continue to grow rapidly, the need for more efficient utilization of resources and better optimized distribution of workload emerges. Our aim is to provide a solution to this optimization problem from three perspectives: (1) Infrastructure level; (2) Application level; and (3) Platform level. In infrastructure level, the problem is to distribute virtual machines (VMs) to the datacenters (DCs) with geographical locations in such a way that latency is minimized while WAN bandwidth and datacenter capacity limits are respected. We plan to model latency as a function of DC load, inter-DC communication and proximity to user. Both VM requests and cloud infrastructure can be represented by graphs where vertices correspond to machines (either physical or virtual) and edges correspond to network connections between them. Our approach will employ weighted graph similarity and subgraph matching to suggest an efficient placement or the list of migrations to reach an efficient placement. VM request is an input to our optimization in infrastructure level but the requested number and capacity of VMs as well as their inter-connections may not be optimal for a specific cloud service. In application level, on the other hand, we plan to deal with the configuration of the MapReduce programming model (More specifically one of its implementations: Apache Hadoop) especially in terms of number of maps and reduces. Previous work has shown that the optimum configuration depends on the resource consumption of the cloud service and it can be determined by executing a fraction to generate a signature. Our aim is to determine the number of maps and reduces statically by analyzing the design model, source code and/or the input data. Furthermore, in platform level we aim to analyze the shuffle and scheduling algorithms of the MapReduce system to achieve a better load balancing and less amount communication between nodes. Shuffle is the phase where the output of all map processors with the same key are assigned to the same reduce processor. We will carry out a cost based formal analysis of the existing Hadoop schedulers to determine which scheduler is more appropriate for given costs of map, reduce and shuffle. In summary, a holistic approach will be carried out to improve the performance of cloud software by optimizing resource allocation. Intended optimizations are on infrastructure level (Resource Selection and Assignment), application level (Map Reduce Configuration) and platform level (Work Distribution and Load Balancing). Cloud environment and resource allocation problem will be modeled based on graphs and automata, and the solutions will be within this context as well.

Satellite communication systems operate in the presence of path loss and atmospherically induced fading, which results in waveform distortion, altering phase and bit time period. After penetrating through several atmospheric layers, the signal experiences Doppler shift which results in frequency change and phase reversal, thus to sync the receiver to the incoming signal we make use of the Phase Locked Loop (PLL) with a filter at its core functioning. To recover and reconstruct the original signal, the use of filter banks in the loop filter block of the PLL will be added and discussed. The idea of using M-channel uniform filter banks is to minimize the error by optimizing the performance in decomposition and reconstruction of signals. Using different types of fundamental coherent digital modulation schemes like, M-ary Amplitude/Frequency /Phase shift keying (MASK, MFSK, MPSK), the best optimized solution can be determined for all M-channels for high data rates and bandwidth constraints. The presentation studies the design of a digital PLL system by using a variable filter block for several digital modulation schemes used in ground to space communication links. Two basic designs will be developed, first model with a fixed set of filters, those seen in traditional legacy systems and the second model, which consist of a filtering block made up of Quadrature Mirror Filter banks (QMF). The method is based on the strength of the incoming signal and modulation scheme, which in turn decides the number of filter banks, to be used to recover the signal. In this presentation, the focus on pseudo-adaptive nature of the filter banks is to reconstruct the original signal, considering the effects of Doppler shift for fast moving airborne platforms. Subsequently, the comparison between the performance of the fixed filter based architecture and the additional design with the variable pseudo-adaptive filter banks design includes the QMF and Discrete Cosine Transform Filter banks (DCT). This will follow with the software oriented simulation of the performance of the proposed design method, in different scenarios experienced in satellite links.

This work describes the application of semantic wikis in distant learning for Semantic Web courses. The resulting system focuses its application of existing and new wiki technology in making a wiki-based interface that demonstrates Semantic Web features. A new layer of wiki technology, called “OWL Wiki Forms” is introduced for this Semantic Web functionality in the wiki interface. This new functionality includes a form-based interface for editing Semantic Web ontologies. The wiki then includes appropriate data from these ontologies to extend existing wiki RDF export. It also includes ontology-driven creation of data entry and browsing interfaces for the wiki itself. As a wiki, the system provides the student an educational tool that students can use anywhere while still sharing access with the instructor and, optionally, other students.
