Ufi is an independent grant giver focused on developing digital technology to deliver adult vocational skills in the UK. They aim to change the way learning is delivered, create a market for vocational and technical education (VocTech), and demonstrate innovative approaches. They provide case studies of funded projects on their website, including blended learning courses and digitally-enriched apprenticeships. Ufi also aims to catalyze change by funding projects that explore new ways of delivering skills through technology.

12. Catalysing change
We know we can’t change everything with
our funds – but we can catalyse change.
We look for projects that explore new ways
of delivering skills, or develop new ways to
support learning, or that take established
technology and apply it to new workplaces
or situations.

My name is Katherine Laux and I am a PM for the UFI Charitable Trust which is dedicated to helping to improve the skills levels of the workforce of the UK through innovative uses of digital technology.
Our sole focus is on promoting the use of digital technology to deliver vocational learning for adults (that’s anyone over 16). We fund organisations which can develop new ways to use digital technology to deliver vocational learning – the learning that enables you to acquire the knowledge and skills you need to get a job, to keep a job and to build a career.
We are a small team with a group of great Trustees that set our strategic direction.
Low levels of workforce skills are holding back UK productivity and increasingly digital technology is changing how we work. Here at Ufi, we believe that digital technology can also provide the solution to long running problems in vocational learning, that we can harness the power of digital technologies to change how people learn and build their skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century.
Our aim is to encourage the supply of digital learning solutions available by creating a visible and vibrant community of developers and learning providers working at the cutting edge of learning technologies and building a pipeline of new learning tools and delivery methods. We believe that technology will make vocational learning better, more accessible and more affordable.
At the same time, we want to promote the demand for new digital learning products and services; demonstrating the value of those who commission or purchase training by raising the visibility of digital learning and showing how it can help meet business needs.

Star Dash Studios is an app based runner game, designed to help people who found it difficult to learn maths in traditional classroom settings. Learners can find enjoyable new ways to learn by relating maths to the real situations they find themselves in at work.
This is a good example of a project designed to reach a very large number of users. Stardash Studios has already been downloaded more than 10,000 times.
It is designed to support the development of basic skills – numeracy in this case – for use in the workplace through an app based runner game. The mini quests and challenges are based on how you might need to use maths at work – in this case an imaginary film studio! It has been carefully tailored to help people develop their maths skills in a work context . People who found it difficult to learn maths in a classroom can find new, more enjoyable ways to learn by relating maths to the real situations they find themselves in at work.
This will help learners to access work; and help employers by ensuring that more people have the numeracy skills required in the workplace.
