3. INTRODUCTION
Libraries have always been the primary institution delegated to
manage, collect, preserve & diffuse human knowledge & culture.
When advances in Computer Science allowed dealing with
digital representation of documents dedicated to capture human
knowledge & culture rather than printed ones, libraries were
particularly involved in exploiting the potential of the digital
revolution. Comprising not only the digital counter part of
documents, images, videos & any kind of multimedia objects.

4. DIGITAL LIBRARY
• Digital Library basically stores information mainly in
electronic format to disseminate a broader user
communities.
• DL is a collection of Digital objects in the form of Text,
Images, Maps, Sounds, Videos, Multimedia compositions
like CD-ROM, Online Databases, etc.
• DL is dynamic, growing organism.

5. DEFINITIONS
• According to Lesk “a DL is a Collection of Information that is
both digitized & organized & which offers capabilities beyond
those of the traditional library”.
• Larson defines “ a DL as a global virtual library the library of
thousand of networked electronic libraries”.
• “A DL is a managed environment of the multimedia materials in
digital form, designed for the benefit of its user population”.

6. OBJECTIVES
• To capture, store, manipulate & distribute information
• To introduce & provide new service
• To have large number of databases in CD’s
• To provide networking facility & resource sharing
• To access national & international journals which are being
published only in machine readable form
• To digitize documents for preservation & for space saving.

7. FUNCTIONS
• Create, maintain, manage, access & preservation of digital
contents.
• The Information repositories are created by producing the
information content in digital form or converting the print
to digital form, stroed in multimedia repositories.
• Made it available through the Internet or from other server
to the workstations.

8. CHARACTERISTICS
• The Digitization of the Information resources : It is basic of the DL &
other characteristics are based on this & Digital is the basis of the
information & Information lives on the digital. This is the difference
b/w DL & Traditional library.
• The Internet of the Information Transfer : The DL has contracted the
world libraries with innumerable computer & internet system.
• The Share of the Information : The DL embodies cross-district, cross-
industry limitless resources & service & embodies cross-district,
cross country co-operation of resource setting up together &
convenient of the resource of the sharing.

• The Knowledge of Information Supply : The DL has been realizing
changing document offering into knowledge offering differ from
the Traditional library.
• The Fictitious Information Object : The DL has connected the
objective library with the fictitious library, & on the basis of the
objective library, it tends to the virtual library.
• A DL is a collection of texts, images or data that has been digitized .
• A DL is should have a system to index & navigate or retrieve
information .
• A DL should have at least one specifical community users .

• DL provides a starting point for all research
• Gain access to the holdings of libraries world wide through
automated catalogue
• The DL is ideal in support of students receiving their schooling
using distance learning education
• Locate both physical & digitized version of scholarly articles &
books

• From search result click through to access the digitized content
or locate additional items of interest
• DL can be customized so user can have access to what they
want & need to use
• The Librarians in full control of the selection of materials for the
Digital Library
• Save search results & conduct additional processing to narrow
or quality results

• Access is an equity issue
• Enough but too many resources
• Cut & Paste
• Google
• Obsolescence of Books
• Budget
• Legislation problems like Copyright Laws
• Standards are in place for interoperability

• Economy problems like no idea about how to cover costs
• Creating & Maintaining a DL requires a tremendous
administrative commitment
• An enormous number of digitized texts are available

14. CONCLUSION
Digital Libraries are distinguished from information retrieval
system because they include more types of media provide
additional functionality & source. The main advantage of DL is
very easy to use, but it has lot of disadvantages like internet
search engine Google gives any type of information, this will
destroys the traditional need of books.

2. I THINK WE SHOULD GO BACK TO TL SYSTEM. DL GIVES
USERS HAVE LOT OF NEGATIVE IDEAS.YOUR OPENION?
3. THE CONCEPT OF PRINT MEDIA INTO DIGITAL MEDIA IS
EASY ACCESS TO THE USERS, NOW THE CONCEPT VIRTUAL
LIBRARY IS GROWING. IF VL IS BETTER THAN DL?
