2. 1. Catalan culture First of all, we would like to make a short explanation about Catalonia . As most of you know, Catalonia is part of Spain, situated in the North-east, on the Mediterranian sea. Although it's not a country itself, it has its own culture (history, language, music...). So that's why we are going to talk about Catalan music, and not Spanish music, which is quite different.
3. History of Catalan music Before the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) popular catalan music was almost non-existent, it was only alive in some rural areas. And during the Franco regime, this situation went worse, until the disappearance of catalan music. Around 1955- 1960 some singers and groups emerge to get back the catalan music. As an anecdote, one of those singers, Serrat, also started to sing in Spanish, and he was sent to Eurovision, but when he said he would sing in Catalan, Masiel was sent there instead of him, and his music was forbidden for some years. On 1970 , the catalan songs are used to stand up to Francoism, and some of these songs are forbbiden. While the Franco's dead is getting closer, catalan music is gettint more important. TV's, radios and reviews, get interested for Catalan music. On 1986 starts the “Rock català”, which will be very listened and followed by young people until nowadays.
