The following is a statement from
2012 Congressional Candidate Joyce S. Johnson
Commemorating Dominican Independence Day
“On behalf of the Joyce Johnson for Congress 2012 campaign, I send my heartfelt congratulations to
Dominicans here and all over the world as we join them in celebrating the 168th anniversary of the Dominican
Republic’s national independence. Today New York and the rest of the country take pause to remember the
invaluable contributions of Dominican-Americans, and celebrate the wide and rich diversity that is the bedrock
of our nation.
“For many years, the Dominican community has been a key driving force behind New York’s economic, social,
and cultural prosperity. Dominican New Yorkers’ contributions to the arenas of education, arts and
entertainment, economic development, and civic leadership have helped to enrich and empower communities
in New York, especially in Harlem, where their hard work, resiliency, and vibrant spirit have made an indelible
impact felt in neighborhoods across the 15th district.
“As we take this time to honor and commemorate our Dominican brothers and sisters, let us remember the
common ground we all share as Americans in pursuit of health, happiness, and success. By standing together in
solidarity, we can overcome the challenges -- and seize the opportunities -- confronting our nation, and move
towards a brighter, more prosperous future for generations to come.”

The following is a statement from
2012 Congressional Candidate Joyce S. Johnson
On Rush Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke Remarks
“I was deeply disappointed and appalled to hear of Rush Limbaugh’s shockingly inappropriate comments
towards Georgetown University Student Sandra Fluke. Not only did the comments display a shameful
misogyny towards women, they demonstrated an embarrassing lack of understanding on his part of the health
and safety merits of accessible and affordable contraceptive methods.
“The venomous rhetoric expressed by Limbaugh and others of his ilk is dangerous and especially disturbing
coming from someone with as much influence as Limbaugh. His remarks amounted to little less than a verbal
assault leveled not only at Ms. Fluke, but at any person – man or woman -- who dares to exercise his or her
right as a citizen to speak out on the issues impacting them, however controversial.
Thankfully, the counter-response has been strong and swift. In addition to the collective outcry from people,
organizations, and corporations across America, a number of Limbaugh’s key backers have pulled their ad
dollars from his show, including LegalZoom, Auto Zone, Quicken Loan, Sleep Number, and ProFlowers.
However, there remain several that still haven’t reached the end of their rope -- but we can help get them there.
Here is a list of sponsors that have yet to pull their support:
Mid-West Life Insurance Company of Tennessee
American Forces Network
Zoogue
Sears Holding Corporation
AOL Tech Guru
Mission Pharmacal Company
Join me in reaching out to these companies, and send the message that we will no longer stand for the divisive,
hateful speech promoted by Limbaugh and his friends. Together we can prove that our voices will not be
silenced.

“FRIENDS OF JOYCE JOHNSON” TO HOST POUGHKEEPSIE FUNDRAISER
ON FRIDAY, MARCH 16TH AT 6 PM
Event will raise money for 2012 Congressional Candidate and Poughkeepsie Native Joyce
Johnson; if elected, she will become first woman elected to Congress in NY’s 13th District.
Poughkeepsie, NY -- With just three months to go until the June primaries, supporters of 2012 Congressional
Candidate Joyce Johnson will host an evening fundraiser in Poughkeepsie this week to raise money for her
campaign. The event, sponsored by “Friends of Joyce Johnson” will take place at KyYah’s Restaurant on
Friday, March 16th from 6-7:30 p.m.
Johnson, a Poughkeepsie native, is running to unseat long-time incumbent Charles Rangel, who has presided
over New York’s 13th Congressional District for nearly half a century. She is a well-respected civil and women’s
rights advocate with more than 30 years of public and private leadership experience. After 17 years as National
Director of Equal Employment Opportunity for Seagram & Sons, Inc., Johnson became Community Relations
Director for the State Comptroller’s Office, and was later appointed NYS Field Director for Obama’s 2008
presidential campaign.
Johnson’s staunch support of progressive issues has earned her the respect of many – including the New York
Times and Women’s Campaign Forum, both of which endorsed her first congressional bid in 2010.
Johnson comes from a distinguished line of dedicated public servants. Her father Columbus L. Stanley was
Poughkeepsie’s first African American council person, and her mother Dorothy B. Stanley became its first
African American school teacher (and later, principal). Together they helped found the Poughkeepsie Voters’
League -- the first grassroots organization to empower the city’s black population.
If elected, Johnson will also make history as the first woman elected to represent NY’s 13th C.D. on Capitol Hill.
As Congresswoman, she will work tirelessly to continue the legacy of committed public service, and be a leader
that the people of NY’s 13th C.D. can count on.
