2. Vivian Maier
American born street
photographer who was
considered as an amateur.
Whose images were only
discovered in 2007 in
storage units and sold off
after she became ill and
went bankrupt. She died in
2009 before finding out her
images had been
discovered and published
on the internet.
3. Tommy Nease
Nease is an American photographer
the collection of images to the right
are from his work ‘Phantasm’(2012).
He work has only recently start to
blow up online. His images are very
ghostly created from his
experimentation with lighting and
exposure creating these quite gothic
and haunting images. You can see
that he may have had taken
influences from horror films made in
1920’s such as ‘Nosferatu’ (1929)
and ‘The Cabinet of Dr Calagri’
(1921).
4. Francesca Woodman
Francesca Woodman was
an American photographer.
Her photographs largely
consisted of images of nude
women she liked to
experiment with expressing
views of gender and herself
through her images. She
took a variety of abstract and
fashion photographs within
the short period she was
alive as she killed her self at
the age of 22 (1981).
5. Edward Steichen
Steichen was an American
photographer and painter. He was
considered the first modern
fashion photographer ever
published during the beginning of
the 20th century. His work was
featured in such magazines as
Vogue and Vanity Fair. After WW2
Steichen became director of the
photography department at New
York Museum of Modern Art till
1962.
6. Brassai
Brassai was an Hungarian
photographer, sculptor and
filmmaker. Who’s work only
become popular in France
during the 20th century. He was
thought to have perfectly
encapsulated Paris in his work
‘Paris By Night’ (1933) which the
image to right is from.
7. Annie Lebovitz
Annie Lebovitz is a very
famous American photographer
most well known for her work
for the Rolling Stones
magazine in the 70s & 80's ,
portraits of famous stars such
as Heath Ledger and Kate
Moss and her now more recent
work which has been fashion
photography for Vanity Fair and
Vogue.
8. Sam Taylor Wood
Sam Taylor Wood is an English
filmmaker, photographer and
visual artist. She is very well
know for a variety of pieces of
work such as ‘Crying Man’ which
included images of Paul Newman
, Sean Penn and Robin Williams.
In 2002 she was commissioned
by the National Portrait Gallery to
make a video portrait which
consisted of David Beckham
sleeping. The image to the right
is called ‘Escape Artist’ (2008).
9. Deborah Tubeville
Turbeville is an English born
fashion photographer. More
recently known for her work in
Italian Vogue specifically her
line of images for Valentino. The
work I specifically wanted to
focus on was ‘Wallflower’
(1978) and ‘Unseen Versailles’
(1980). These where her more
abstract pieces of work thus
creating these haunting images.
Which is conveyed through her
experimentation with exposure
and location.
