Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease in the United States
Around 5.1 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and it is more prevalent in
the aging population. The National Institute of Aging shares that the condition doubles
every five years after 65 years old.
While the number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s is increasing, there is a
noticeable decline in those suffering from general dementia. The rate of dementia
among Americans aged 65 and above has dropped by 24 percent over the past 12 years
– from 11.6 percent in 2000 to 8.8 percent in 2012.
3. How Drinking Champagne can Prevent the Development of These Conditions
The University of Reading conducted a study in 2013 focusing on the link between
drinking champagne and memory. The university aimed to study how drinking 1 to 3
glasses of champagne every week can boost brain health, preventing the possibility of
memory loss. The researchers conducted the study on rodents and found that
compounds in champagne can enhance their spatial memory, which records information
for future reference.
They attribute these benefits to the phenolic compounds found in the two types of
grapes used in producing the alcohol. While red wine is known to have flavonoids that
have similar brain-boosting benefits as champagne, Professor Jeremy Spencer from the
University of Reading shares that the latter, “…which lack flavonoids, is also capable of
influencing brain function through the actions of smaller phenolic compounds, previously
through to lack biological activity.”

Even then, researchers were cautious about encouraging people to partake in this,
saying, “We encourage a responsible approach to alcohol consumption,” adding “and our
results suggest that a very low intake of one to two glasses a week can be effective.”
Though champagne has its advantages, people should still do this with precaution. While
it does have brain boosting advantages, many researchers and physicians do not advise
consuming this and other types of alcohol as a preventative substance for Alzheimer’s
disease.
