Migration refers to the movement of people between locations. There are two forms of international migration: immigration, where people enter a country to live permanently, and emigration, where people leave their home country. People migrate for both forced reasons, having no choice, and voluntary reasons, responding to opportunities. Key factors that influence migration include political, economic, environmental and social push factors that induce people to leave an area, and pull factors that attract people to a destination. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) comprise a large portion of Filipinos living abroad, many working in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Hong Kong and Taiwan in elementary occupations and services. 8. OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS
(OFW)
• An Overseas Filipino Worker
(Filipino: Pilipino sa Ibayong-dagat)
is a person of Filipino origin who
lives outside the Philippines.
• This term applies to Filipinos who
are abroad indefinitely as citizens or
as permanent residents of a different
country and to those Filipino citizens
abroad for a limited, definite period,
such as on a work contract or as
students.

(OFW)
• The life of "OFW" is not easy, they
work to foreign country and
sacrifice. They go and find a job
there, so that they will be able to
earn money to support the daily
needs and give a better future to
their family left here in the
Philippines.

• The number of Overseas Filipino
Workers (OFWs) who worked
abroad at anytime during the
period April to September 2019
was estimated at 2.2 million.
• Overseas Contract Workers
(OCWs) or those with existing
work contract comprised 96.8
percent of the total OFWs during
the period April to September
2019.
• There were more females than
males among OFWs. The
proportion of female OFWs to
the total OFWs was at 56 percent
compared to their male
counterpart at 44 percent.

• At the regional level,
CALABARZON reported the
largest proportion of OFWs with
20.7 percent, followed by
Central Luzon with 13.3 percent,
National Capital Region with 9.7
percent and Western Visayas
with 9.0 percent share.
Saudi Arabia continued to be the
most preferred destination of
OFWs. About one out of five
(22.4%) OFWs worked in Saudi
Arabia during the period April to
September 2019. The other popular
destinations were:
• United Arab Emirates (13.2%),
• Hongkong (7.5%), and
• Taiwan (6.7%).

Among occupation groups, two in every five (39.6%)
OFWs engaged in elementary occupations, which
comprised the largest share in the total OFWs.
Service and sales workers comprised the second
largest at 18 percent. The largest group of the male
OFWs worked as plant and machine operators and
assemblers (24.7%).
