About the Presenter
My name is Isha Pacheco, a third year student at the University of the Southern
Caribbean. Currently studying Elementary Education at the said University, I hope
to one day become not only a teacher, but an individual with whom special
teacher-student relationships can be developed with all to aid in creating a
comfortable learning environment for my students within the near future.
Relationships.
• When we speak of relationships,
communication is an important component
within relationships. In so meaning,
communication is the basis of our
relationships. Having said that, a positive
relationship initially entails positive
communication.
Importance of Developing
Positive Relationships
• According to Henry(1996), “Building positive
relationships is not only vital for teachers
students, collegues and caretakers, it is entirely
vital for the success of an individual as a person”.
• When an individual develops a positive or
positive relationships, one especially tends to feel
highly comfortable interacting
Importance of Developing
Positive Relationships.
• With the mentioned having been stated, when positive
relationships are , established or even developed,
individuals with whom these relationships are
developed:
• Develops a sense of comfort
• Develops a level of trust
• Encourages a boost in confident and self esteem
Importance of Developing
Positive Relationships.

individuals to collaborate or work together,
gives a sense of belonging, encourages
personal growth , a feeling of happiness,
support and a connection to and with others.
Importance of Developing Positive
Relationships with students.
Importance of Developing Positive
Relationships with Students
• According to Nakamura (2000), “Teachers play an
important role in the nurturing and learning of students
throughout their schooling experience or their school’s
journey so to speak”.
• A positive student-teacher relationships helps students to
view the school as a home away from home, in so doing
enabling student to become highly comfortable within such
environment.
• Also, students may become inspired to meet the
school’s or classroom’s requirements both
academically and behavioral.
• Further, positive relationships with students
encourages high confidence levels, high levels of
participation and involvement within the
classroom and entirely when learning.
• Positive teacher-student relationships allows the
learner to feel appreciated, respected,
acknowledged and in some cases even admired.
• Many researchers stated that the student- teacher
relationship plays an important role in reducing
low academic achievement and delinquency.
• This is so since, having such a relationship
between both individuals, students often make
learning, academic success and great
achievement their priority, in so doing,
working hard given the fact that they value not
only their teachers but initially their learning.
Ways to develop positive
relationships with students
• Get to know students
• Allow students to appropriately
voice their opinions
• Provide timely and positive
feedback
• Applaud/ congratulate students for
excellence and efforts
• Avoid embarrassing students
• Believe in , encourage and have
faith in students.
• Make mention of a student’s
improved academic or behavioural
performances
• Be Patient.
• Allot time to converse with
students, to listen to their concerns,
issues or any challenges faced with
Importance of Developing Positive
Relationships with Parents
Importance of positive relationships
with parents
• Communication is essentially important to create or somewhat maintain
relationships. As a teacher, having that of positive relationships with
parents ,initially encourages and/or increases parental involvement within
their child’s learning, their progress and even within the classroom.
• Additionally, both the teacher and the parent will be able to collaborate
effectively to both understand and meet the needs of the child this which
seemingly establishes strong working relationships between both parents
and teachers and most importantly between teachers and students.
Ways to develop positive
relationships with parents
• Provide timely positive
feedback about the child’s
progress
• Communicate as often as
possible in various forms.
• Invite parents to visit to
keep abreast of their
child’s or children’s
progress especially when
the child isnt performing
as they ought to.
Continued ways to develop positive
relationships with parents
• Assign at least two days during the term for
parent-teacher conferences . On such day parents
will be able to:
• Voice their opinions or any concerns thereof.
• View student’s work, this being test scores,
assignments, any work of art created and the
student’s overall academic performance.
Continued Ways to develop positive
relationships with parents.
• Email parents student’s scores on given weekly test .
However, for parents who may not have access to email
or any other forms of technology, phone calls will be
made so as to inform not only some parents but all
parents.
• Collaborate with parents so as to enable the student to
maximize their full potentials and seek their best
interests.
• Invite/Allow parents to participate within
decision making.
• Provide/suggest if necessary, strategies that
can be used to support the child and their
learning at home.
Importance of Developing Relationships with
teachers/colleagues.
Importance of developing positive
relationships with teachers/colleagues
• Just as it is of great importance to develop positive
relationships with students and parents, so to is it of great
importance to develop positive relationships with teachers
or colleagues.
• Developing positive relationships with other teachers may
allow cooperation or collaborations so to speak amongst
teachers in various departments this which will create a
collaborative atmosphere within the school’s environment.
Ways to develop positive relationships with
teachers/ colleagues
• Be mindful that each individual is different and one
should not expect another to think in the manner in
which he/ she would. This means appreciate eachother,
eachother’s thoughts, opnions, feelings and even ways
in which they do things.
• Show appreciation entirely but also when helped or
when assistance is offered
• Accept constructive criticism
• Give constructive criticism when necessary in the
most appropriate manner.
• Avoid gossiping
• Share different ideas in teaching subjects.
• Cooperate, be a team player.
• Be supportive of other teachers and their work.
• Be appreciative of the different teaching styles
or strategies of others.
• Speak positively to and about others
Thank You
