Cole Are jus a small number of artists who were part of the genre and contributed a lot to the rise of
the genre and artists that are currently in the Genre.
Hip Hop/Rap music originated from the USA (United States of America) in New York, South Bronx
in the 1970s. In the early days of Hip Hop the music linked to many different things such as brake
dancing, Graffiti, DJ’s, culture etc. Kool Herc is the name of a rapper from the 1970s who is
regarded as one of the artists that helped Hip Hop through its ‘pioneering’ stage. He was Jamaican
born and the moved to Bronx, New York at an early age. In the 1970s it was a an underground type
of music (meaning not commercial) but, now Hip Hop is listened to all over the world and classed
as a mainstream type of music. Eminem is the most successful Hip Hop artist.
The imagery associated with Hip Hop is American style clothing and accessories such as caps,
chains, other jewellery, baggy clothing and another type of imagery you could say is associated with
Hip Hop success and money, because a lot of the artists in the scene come from poor backgrounds
a lot of artists in their songs talk about there success and things that may have occurred in the past.
There is a new style of Hip Hop now which artists such as Lil Wayne, Drake, J Cole are classed as.
These rappers lyrics are different the lyrics consist more about money and the songs/ tracks that
are made by these artists are said to be more commercial.
