2. LIFE
Born into a cultured Bogotá family,
Silva had a carefree life. When he
was hardly ten, he wrote his first
poems. In 1882 he traveled to
England, Switzerland, and France,
and there, he met with other
romantic writers.

In 1892, his beloved sister Elvira
died. In 1895, Silva's only major
work of prose was lost in a
shipwreck. Under the weight of

On May 24, 1896, a house maid
found Silva dead in his bed; he
had shot himself in the night
before. Prior to his death, he
asked his doctor to mark the
exact location of his heart.
