10. What is On-the-Job Training
(OJT)?
Training by an employer that is provided to a paid participant
while engaged in productive work in a job that:
Provides knowledge or skills essential to the job
Provides reimbursement to the employer of up to 50% of
the wage rate of the participant
Is limited in duration as appropriate to the occupation for
which the participant is being trained
Provides participant with a credential or certification of
skill attainment such as a high school diploma, including
special diplomas; GED or other recognized equivalents;
post-secondary degrees/certificates; recognized skill
standards (OCP); and licensure or industry-recognized
certificates.

12. Who is Eligible for
OJT?
Employment Agency
A temporary employment agency may serve as
the employer of record for purposes of
providing OJT to a participant in regular, on-
going employment in a specific occupation
(and not when such agency provides
probationary, seasonal, temporary, or
intermittent employment) so long as the
employer of record meets the same
requirements as a regular employer.

An OJT agreement might by executed
between current employer and training
provider if employed worker meets the
following criteria:
Not earning a self-sufficient wage;
OJT relates to the introduction of new
technologies or career advancement;
Skills to be learned are in demand;
OJT agreement documents a plan for job retention
or wage progression at the end of the contracted
training period.

Ongoing attainment of
competencies must be documented.
Duration:
The agreement must specify the time needed
for participant to earn skills required for the
position.
OJT agreement must not exceed 1,040 hours
over 6 consecutive calendar months. This
includes time spent in related classroom
training activities for which employer pays
wages.

Compensation:
Total possible employer compensation of $8,000.
Payments to employer should not exceed 50% of the
total wages paid by the employer during the training
period.
OJT payments may not be based on overtime, shift
differential, premium pay and other non-regular
wages paid by the employer.
OJT participants must be subject to the same rates,
including periodic increases, as similarly situated
employees as well as equal working conditions and
fringe benefits (i.e. holiday pay, insurance, taxes).

OJT not allowed for occupations with high
turnover rates (i.e. customer service
clerks).
Source of income cannot include tips,
commissions, or piecework.
Participant cannot work from home.

21. What is Customized
Training?
Employer-specific training in which the
employer can recoup up to 50% of the
training costs incurred per trainee
Reimbursable expenses include:
instructor’s salary, tuition, curriculum
development, textbooks, manuals, tools
and other supplies.

Requirements
Business must legally operate in Miami-Dade County or
Monroe County and remain current with all tax
obligations and licenses.
South Florida Workforce (SFW) must confirm that the
participant requires training and that his/her skills will
improve after the training period.
Participants must train in occupations that pay a
minimum of $11.00/hr.
Employer must retain participant after the end of the
contract.
Reimbursements apply to programs at approved
educational institutions during the period of training,
which cannot exceed 40 hours per week.
Participant eligibility is the same as OJT.
