Autologous bone marrow transplant – Auto means “self ”. In this procedure,
stem cells are removed prior to receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy and
stored in a freezer (cryopreservation). After radiation therapy, stem cells are put
back in the body to add to the normal blood cells.
Allogenic bone transplant – Allo means “other”. Stem cells are removed from
another person called donor who may be partly matched genetically with the
patient. Siblings, parents, children and other relatives can be good matches.
Umbilical cord blood transplant – When stem cells are removed from newborn
baby’s umbilical cord and stored until they are needed for transplant is known as
umbilical cord blood transplant. Since umbilical cord blood cells are immature,

Physical Examination of the patient to assess if he is in a position to
accept bone marrow transplant.
Harvesting stem cells – The procedure is done under general anaesthesia.
In the operating room, a needle is inserted into the cavity of the rear hip
bone or “iliac crest” where a large quantity of bone marrow is located, and
bone marrow is collected. The bone marrow is purged to remove cancer
cells in case of autogenic graft or to prevent rejection of allogenic graft
from T cells. The stem cells are frozen at a temperature between -80 to 196 degrees.
