5. These depicted people embody the so-called “Khon Geb
Khaya” (ENG: “people clean/collect trash”) who earn a
living from collecting recylcable materials plastics, paper,
metals,etc. They lived near one of most important and
hugest highways in Bangkok. Actually they would have no
place to live and not enough money to rent a house so they
just occupied an abandoned house in front of a huge blank
billboard without any advertising.
I accompained these people within 3-4weeks visited
them, brought them food or clothes. Things they urgently
need and must a right to possess like every people on that
world.
The family consists of the grandfather and his son as
soon his wife and other relatives. In last picture you can see
that they forced to moved on to find other places nearer in
the city like gypsies usually do.
In last pictures you see how they moved out from that place
with their whole belongings.
This social phenonmena is not typical Thai but also
worldwide. Nowadays in the last decades this topic aquired
global importance. But especially here in Bangko without
these people collecting and recycling trash and various ma-
terials the whole already very unstable system of recyling
would finally totally collapse. Newer statistics proved that
Thailand only reprocesses 11 percent of a possibly recy-
clable 4.5 Millions of tons, excluding the Khon Geb Kaya,
the state recycles just 3 percent.
