REPORT SAMPLE
EDUCATION SYSTEM IN NIGERIA
Formal education system in Nigeria is supervised by the Ministry of
Education, and is governed by the federal government, as well as state
governments and local governments. The education is compulsory and
state–sponsored till 15 years of age.
Formal education is segregated into early childhood/pre–primary,
primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, and higher education.
Education from early childhood till junior secondary falls under the
Universal Basic Education (UBE) program of the government, as per the
UBE Act, 2004. Further, as per the act, financing of basic education falls
under the responsibilities of state and local governments, with the federal
government allocating 2% of its Consolidated Revenue Fund for the same.
Primary education is of six years, and starts at the age of four. The primary
education is compulsory and state–sponsored in government schools. At
this stage, students are taught elementary–level English language,
Christian Religious Knowledge, Islamic knowledge studies, Mathematics,
Science and one of the three main indigenous languages — Hausa-Fulani,
Yoruba, and Igbo.

On completion of primary education, a student enters the second phase of
Universal Basic Education, comprising of Junior Secondary Education.
Junior secondary education spans for three years. Upon completion,
students are required to take Junior School Certificate Examinations and
pass it in at least six subjects, in order to continue their education. Junior
secondary education’s curriculum includes English, French, Science,
Technology, Mathematics, Social Studies, and one of the three main
indigenous languages — Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo.
The compulsory primary and junior secondary school education is followed
by three years of senior secondary schooling. A student passing Junior
Secondary Certificate Examination (JSCE) is enrolled into senior secondary
school at Grade 10. While the core subjects include English, French,
Mathematics, Science, Technology, Social Studies, and one of the three
main indigenous languages — Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo, students
can also choose to study a number of elective subjects.
After completing Grade 12, students take the Senior Secondary Certificate
Examination (SSCE), which is conducted by examination boards — West
African Examination Council (WAEC), or the National Examination Council
(NECO). Many private schools in Nigeria also offer the Cambridge
International Examination curriculum that leads to IGSCE examinations
after Grade 12.
Students also have an option to go for technical and vocational education
after junior secondary schooling. Nigeria’s National Board for Technical
Education has a two–tier system of technical and vocational education —

which is offered at science technical schools, and leads to National
Technical/Commercial Certificates (NTC/NCC) and Advanced National
Technical/Business Certificates. NTC/NCC lasts three years after Junior
Secondary School and is considered equivalent to the SSCE by the Joint
Admission and Matriculation Board.
The Advanced program, on the other hand, starts after grade 12, and is
equivalent to undergraduate higher education. It includes two years of
pre-entry industrial work experience and one year of full-time study. There
are several government as well as private polytechnics, monotechnics and
colleges of education providing technical and vocational education.
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has also authorized private
entities to run Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs) and Innovation
Enterprise Institutions (IEIs) — which offer vocational, technical,
technology or professional education and training at post-basic and higher
education levels. The institutions work as alternative to formal higher
education, and intended to address the demand for skilled manpower in
the country.
Students passing Senior Secondary Certificate Examination are enrolled for
formal higher education. Nigeria has 143 universities, including 61 private
universities — governed by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Students have to attain minimum credits in SSCE and cut-off marks in Joint
Admission and Matriculation Board Entrance Examination (JAMB), in order
to enroll for higher education. The courses typically span from four to six
years.
