InTechnology’s Harrogate data centre brochure focuses on the key features that any business should look at when looking for a hosting solution such as; power resilience, network connectivity, security and renewable energy sources. http://www.intechnology.co.uk/hosting/harrogate-data-centre.aspx
2. You might think “long-running” means
it’s getting old, but a complete multi-
million pound refresh in 2008/09 brought
it up to date. What’s more, it has an
unrivalled reliability record. In the many
years the data centre has been open,
we have not had a single service outage,
not even during major maintenance.
This booklet gives an overview of the key
technical aspects of the Harrogate facility,
including power resilience, security,
network and environmental policy. It
will explain why the data centre is able
to deliver a business-class, industrial-
strength service – backed by a 99.95%
guaranteed service level agreement.
If you’d like more details on any of our
services, support or engineering, please
get in touch.
Similarly, if you’d like to hear more about
our other data centres, just let us know.
Our data centres are the backbone of our business –
so we make sure they have the specification to deliver
the level of service we promise our customers. We have
three data centres, located in Reading, London Docklands
and Harrogate. Harrogate is our longest-running data
centre, and it also serves as our company headquarters.
IN THE MANY YEARS THE DATA CENTRE
HAS BEEN OPEN, IT HAS NOT HAD A
SINGLE SERVICE OUTAGE – NOT EVEN
DURING MAJOR MAINTENANCE.
THE HARROGATE DATA CENTRE
3. Our data centre has a Tier 4 electrical system, with two distinct electrical paths from substation to cabinet. So if one goes down,
there’s a second, completely independent feed available straight away.
As well as the two feeds, there is a 2 MVA
UPS backup. In the unlikely case of both
power feeds failing simultaneously, battery
power will keep the centre running until
the generators come online.
Our three backup generators have a
combined capacity of 3.75 MVA. This
means each generator has enough
capacity to run the data centre
independently. Therefore, if one fails,
there’s another to take its place. Our N+1
mains supply means we can offer true
energy resilience, allowing us to give our
clients a 99.95% supply commitment.
This extra capacity enables us to take part
in the government’s Short Term Operating
Reserve (STOR) programme. Our resilience
and efficiency means that we can actually
put power back into the National Grid,
thereby contributing positively to the UK’s
overall generation capacity.
We also have N+1 chilling systems
to ensure the data centre is kept at
a constant temperature. Our chilling
facility uses a hybrid combination of
chilled water and Denco CRAC units.
Each system is independent from the
other, and controlled through our building
management systems.
Our entire data centre plant is under
24 hour surveillance, with an expert,
on-site team monitoring hundreds of
metrics to make sure the facility is
running as it should. So if something does
go wrong, we can fix it immediately.

POWER RESILIENCE
If your data is unavailable, your business cannot run.
If we lose power, you lose everything. We know this, and
that’s why power resilience is a major consideration for
our data centres.
4. InTechnology has a next-generation enhanced MPLS
network: true “best-of-breed” technology. Our high
speed, high bandwidth network reaches 98% of the
UK population, with fully-managed links into Tier 1
carriers. Customer sites can be connected to the core
with ADSL, Ethernet or leased-line circuits.
THE NETWORK
Our data centres are at the heart of
our network, so our customers can
get access to the hosting facilities
through our resilient, world-class
LANnet MPLS network.
The network is fully optimised and self-
healing: in the event of a fibre break, it
automatically reroutes traffic.
Like our data centre, our network is a
key part of our business. Therefore, we
invest heavily in its management and
maintenance, and monitor it 24 hours
a day, seven days a week.
WE MONITOR IT
24 HOURS A DAY,
7 DAYS A WEEK.
5. SECURITY
We are ISO 27001 certified and PCI
accredited, meaning the Harrogate
data centre adheres to strict security
measures. Physical access to and
throughout the facilities is restricted by job
role, with a formal authorisation process
for anyone wishing to get further access.
All employees also complete annual
security training.
Furthermore, we have a security
management process, with ongoing
reviews and audits.
THE SITE HAS CONTROLLED ACCESS, WITH A FIVE LEVEL
SECURITY PROTOCOL.
1. Physical vetting by building security. Access to InTechnology office
areas is only possible with staff security passes, through a single
access point.
2. There is a separate, dedicated data centre entry point. This is
controlled with card and PIN readers.
3. Man traps are in place at the entrance to the data floor. These have
physical person verification, to prevent tailgating.
4. Technical space is subdivided, with additional card readers in place
in each section.
5. All cabinets are kept locked and secured.
Additionally, CCTV monitors all areas, with footage retained for
months afterwards, in compliance with ISO 27001.
6. REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Renewable energy.
We purchase all our electricity from
renewable sources, to cut down our
carbon emissions.
Recycling.
All our old equipment is assessed to
see if it can be reused. If not, then it is
dismantled and used for spares. Only if it
can’t be used in either of these ways do
we send it for WEEE processing.
Efficiency.
We make efficiency a central concern
in any new service we develop.
Where possible, we introduce server
virtualisation and source more efficient
equipment. We have also invested in cold
aisle containment to cut energy use. This
has resulted in a PUE of 1.8; below the
average for a traditional data centre.
Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR).
InTechnology is a partner in the
government’s STOR programme. When
there’s a peak in electrical demand,
National Grid contacts STOR partners, and
asks them to remove their demand from
the Grid. By taking part, InTechnology
helps reduce the need for new energy
generation plants to be built, and cuts
emissions by using onsite generators.
Investment in the future.
InTechnology’s multi-million pound
investment in infrastructure will ensure
eco-friendly operations in the long-term.
We take our responsibility towards cutting our carbon
emissions and environmental impact seriously. Here are
just some of the ways we’re trying to be lean and green.
