The Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is a competitive exam conducted by the UPSC in India to select candidates for prestigious Group A engineering posts in various departments. The written exam consists of 1000 marks across subjects testing general ability, technical knowledge, and engineering principles. 1. Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is combined competitive examination conducted by the UPSC.
Based on the results of this examination allocation will be made to several Group ‘A’ Services or posts
under the following categories: (a) Civil Engineering, (b) Mechanical Engineering, (c) Electrical
Engineering, (d) Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
ESE is famously known as IES (Indian Engineering Services) is the standardized and highest level
of exam for engineering graduates in India. ESE exam is conducted annually and written qualified
candidates shall be called for Personal interview and later the list of finally selected candidates is
announced. ESE selected candidates will be gradually allotted various departments like Indian
Railways, Central Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service, Indian Defense Service for
Engineers, Central Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services etc depending upon their all India
ranks. ESE selected candidates are branded ‘A’ class gazetted officers who serve the engineering
aspect of the nation under the umbrella of the government.
Scheme Of Exam:
UPSC-ESE exam is conducted in the month of May/June. The written exam is for 1000 marks which
includes General Ability Test (200 marks), Objective-I(200 marks), Objective-II(200 marks),
Conventional-I(200 marks), Conventional-II(200 marks). The results are announced in the month of
Dec/Jan and candidates who have cleared the written exam shall be called for the Personality
Interview Test which is of 200 marks. Finally candidates are selected based on scores of written exam
and personality interview test.
The number on vacancies for ESE vary from 450-500 every year. The seats are reserved for General,
OBC, SC, ST and physically handicapped candidates. The cut-off marks for selection varies for
different categories. Analysis of previous marks of ESE selected candidate’s reveals that the cut-off
criteria of electronics engineering are highest and civil engineering the lowest.
