Data center giant Equinix discloses ransomware incident
Equinix is currently investigating a security incident we detected that involves ransomware on some of our internal systems. Our teams took immediate and decisive action to address the incident, notified
law enforcement and are continuing to investigate. Our data centers and our service offerings, including managed services, remain fully operational, and the incident has not affected our ability to support
our customers. Note that as most customers operate their own equipment within Equinix data centers, this incident has had no impact on their operations or the data on their equipment at Equinix. The
security of the data in our systems is always a top priority and we intend to take all necessary actions, as appropriate, based on the results of our investigation.

Severalnines' Multi-Cloud, Full-Ops database management provides extra protection for disaster recovery
Multi-cloud databases have been growing largely in popularity in recent years, and their adoption is becoming more widely accepted by more and more businesses. Severalnines is helping organizations
take control of their database and efficiently deploy and manage highly available, open source database clusters. Not only does having multiple cloud vendors prevent organizations from being dependent
on a single vendor, but the increased security and reliability of multiple, decentralized database deployments ensure that if one instance experiences an unexpected outage, business can quickly resume
as usual.

Robinhood outage locks users out of recovering US market
Robinhood, the $7.6 billion-valued stock trading app based in the US, was hit by a serious outage on one of the best days for US stocks since the financial crisis. For nearly the entire day yesterday, its
10 million users were unable to access their accounts and make trades. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a 1,294 point gain – its biggest point gain ever according to Business
Insider. The start-up’s iOS, Android, and web apps were all down from Monday morning until the close of trading in the afternoon according to its site status. Going down minutes after trading opened, the
trading app swiftly acknowledged the issue at 9:30 Eastern Time (ET). At 11:30 ET the company said it was implementing a fix, but come 16:00 major outages were still affecting customers’ access to
their accounts.

Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers hit by system outage
The new year got off to a bad start for Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers, who were unable to gain access to their accounts through the banks’ websites and mobile apps for almost eight
hours because of an outage. Customers took to social media apps from around 4am on New Year’s Day to rail against the outage, particularly because many direct debits are due on Thursday. One
customer complained that Lloyds was “taking the ‘bank holiday’ a little too literally”. All three banks, which are part of Lloyds Banking Group, tweeted to say the services were back to normal at around
1.30pm, after apologizing to customers and saying they were working to fix the problems. The failure was not thought to be caused by a cyber-attack but rather down to an internal issue.

Amazon, Facebook internet outage: Verizon blamed for 'cascading catastrophic failure‘
A Verizon error resulted in a "cascading catastrophic failure" that triggered widespread internet outages on Monday, affecting Cloudflare, Amazon, Facebook, and others. Website accelerator firm
Cloudflare described the event as a "small heart attack" that left websites that rely on it, such as voice and text chat app Discord, unreachable from many parts of the internet for about two hours. And,
according to Cloudflare, it was completely avoidable.

British Airways vows 'never again' after costly IT collapse
LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways (BA) said it would take steps to ensure there was no repeat of a computer system failure that stranded 75,000 passengers over a holiday weekend and turned into a

and also hit its call centers and website. The airline was returning to normal on Monday, planning to run more than 95 percent of flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick, with only a handful of short-
haul flights canceled.

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) has said some of its services are still down following an outage at Fujitsu's Homebush datacenter earlier this month. Fujitsu experienced an outage on Saturday, August
19, 2017 at 9.30pm, at the datacenter in the outskirts of Sydney that hosts the majority of SLSA's servers. In an email sighted by ZDNet, SLSA informed members that it had worked with Fujitsu to restore
a number of its systems; however, its Members Area portal, iRisk, and SEMS systems were still down as of Monday.
