• Enterprises have to adapt quickly to changing world, or they
will become extinct quickly.
• Agile was developed for small teams and doesn’t scale.
• Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) combines the best
in Agile with systems thinking and Lean product development.
• SAFe is an evolving system of innovation and ideas.

ALIGNMENT
• Management and teams are more helpful if they are aligned to
a common mission
• Global alignment delivers more value than local optimization.
• Management sets the mission, but does so with minimal
constraints.

BUILT-IN QUALITY
• The economic impact of poor quality is much higher at scale.
• Built-in quality practices increase customer satisfaction
and provide faster, more predictable value delivery.
• Ability to innovate and take risks.

TRANSPARENCY
• ‘You can’t manage a secret.’ Transparency builds trust.
• Large-scale solution development is hard; things don’t always
work out as planned.
• Trust enables fast decision-making and employee
empowerment and engagement.
• ‘The facts are always friendly.’

PROGRAM EXECUTION
• Traditional structures don’t support innovation, speed, and
agility.
• SAFe creates stable teams-of-Agile-teams, in the form of an
Agile Release Train (ART).
• Successful SAFe is regular and predictable value delivery from
each Agile Release Train.
• SAFe’s Program level provides extensive guidance to the roles
and responsibilities.

SAFe LEAN-AGILE PRINCIPLES
1. Take an economic view
2. Apply system thinking
3. Assume variability; preserve options
4. Build incrementally with fast, integrated learning cycles
5. Base milestones on objective evaluation of working systems
6. Visualize and limit WIP, reduce batch sizes,
and manage queue lengths
7. Apply cadence, synchronize with cross-domain planning
8. Unlock the intrinsic motivation of knowledge workers
9. Decentralize decision-making

TEAM LEVEL
• Empowered, self-organizing, self-managing, cross-functional
team
• Delivers valuable, tested, working system every 2 weeks
• Uses a team framework which combines the best of Scrum
project management, XP-inspired technical practices and
Kanban for flow
• Value delivery via User Stories.

PROGRAM LEVEL
• Self-organizing, self-managing team-of-agile-teams
• Operates with Vision, architecture and UX guidance
• Face-to-face planning for collaboration, alignment, and
adaptation
• Value delivery via Features

AGILE RELEASE TRAIN
DELIVERS SOLUTION
• The schedule is fixed
• A new system increment every 2
weeks
• The PI timebox is fixed
• The train has a known velocity
• Agile Teams
• Dedicated people
• Face-to-face PI Planning
• Innovation and Planning (IP)
• Inspect and Adapt (I&A)
• Develop on Cadence. Release on
Demand

PI planning is essential to SAFe:
If you aren’t doing it, you aren’t doing SAFe.
1. Cadence-based, face-to-face event is the heartbeat of the ART
2. Includes all members of the ART, whenever possible
3. Takes 2 days for the Innovation and Planning (IP) Iteration
- 26. Copyright © 2018, AMC Bridge LLC
• We are already at PI 7.
• Our ART consists of 7 teams (3 remote) and about 80 people.
• Productivity increases from PI to PI.
• PI Planning is fun. Transparency is cool.
• IP Sprint!
• No matter how good you plan, there is always something that
requires adjustments.
• Unnecessarily large number of meetings.

SUMMARY
• The Framework has four core values that help make SAFe effective: Alignment, Built-in Quality,
Transparency and Program Execution.
• SAFe’s practices are grounded on nine fundamental principles that have evolved from Agile principles
and methods, Lean product development, systems thinking, and observation of successful
enterprises.
• The “House of Lean” metaphor is used to describe a number of fundamental lean concepts used in
SAFe. The goal of lean is the delivery of maximum value and quality to the customer in the shortest
sustainable lead time.
• The heart of SAFe is the Program level, which revolves around an organization called the Agile Release
Train (ART).
